NESCAC Player of the Week
Tristan Joseph – Middlebury – Jr. – G – Norwalk, Conn.
Joseph tallied a career-high 37 points to help Middlebury claim a 92-84 overtime victory against Bates on Saturday, the lone game of the week for the Panthers. The junior’s point total is a single-game high in the NESCAC this season and is the highest by a Panther since 2012. Joseph shot 5-for-6 from the charity stripe, 13-for-26 from the floor and sank five 3-pointers. The guard ranks second on the team and ranks fifth in the conference in scoring, averaging 15.5 points per game.
NESCAC Weekly Honor Roll
Amherst –
Will Scherer (Darnestown, Md.) averaged 15.0 points and 15.5 rebounds per game in a 1-1 week. In a 76-70 overtime loss at Colby, Scherer posted a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds while shooting 5-of-11 from the floor. In a 59-55 win at Bowdoin, Scherer netted 15 points and grabbed 19 rebounds while shooting 7-of-12 from the floor against the Mules. The senior shot 53.1 percent from the floor for the week.
Bates –
Marc Begin II (Carlsbad, Calif.) turned in a steady week for the Bobcats, starting with a team-high 15 points in a 63-58 win over Maine Maritime Academy on Tuesday. He knocked down 4-of-8 from 3-point range against the Mariners. The sophomore guard turned in another efficient performance Friday at Williams, scoring nine points on 3-of-5 shooting and tallying a pair of steals. The guard capped off the week with 10 points on 3-of-6 shooting Saturday at Middlebury, hitting 2-of-3 from long distance. Overall, Begin II hit seven of his 12 3-point attempts in the three games.
Bowdoin - First-year
Ray Cuevas (Ipswich, Mass.) averaged 18.5 points per game in a pair of close NESCAC losses for the Polar Bears last weekend.
Colby –
Sam Hinman (Needham, Mass.) averaged 17.5 points off the bench for Colby last weekend as the Mules split with Amherst and Hamilton. The sophomore shot 52 percent from the floor and 47 percent from behind the arc, and his five overtime points helped push the Mules past the Mammoths. Hinman has reached double-digits in four of his last five games, averaging 14.4 points per game over that stretch.
Conn. College –
Cam Schainfeld (Newton, Mass.) averaged a team-high 16.5 points and 3.5 assists per game last week as the Camels took on a pair of in-state NESCAC foes. The senior netted a game-high 20 points and added four assists and two steals at Trinity and followed that effort with 13 points, three assists, and a steal against top-ranked Wesleyan.
Hamilton –
Hank Morgan (Caldwell, N.J.) averaged 24.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 2.0 steals and shot 59 percent (17-of-29) from the field in a 2-0 road weekend for the Continentals. Morgan posted 25 points, eight boards, two steals, and two assists in a 75-70 win at Bowdoin. The senior scored 19 points in the first half on 6-of-6 shooting from the floor and 5-for-5 at the free-throw line. Morgan recorded 23 points, including 17 in the second half as the Continentals maintained the lead in the second stanza, seven rebounds, two steals, and two assists in an 83-75 victory at Colby.
Trinity –
Henry Vetter (Kenilworth, Ill.) served as a playmaker for the Bantams in a 3-0 week, including a win over No. 9 Tufts. Vetter averaged 13.3 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 5.0 assists over the three games. In a 60-53 NESCAC victory over Conn College, the junior netted 14 points with game-highs of seven rebounds and six assists. Vetter stuffed the stat sheet in the win over the Jumbos, tallying a game-high 22 points, shooting 6-of-13 from the field and 8-of-10 from the foul line, with five rebounds and four assists.
Wesleyan – Senior
Shane Regan (Larchmont, N.Y.) led the Cardinals to a 2-0 weekend as No. 1 Wesleyan improved to 21-0 following wins over Tufts and Conn. College. The victory over Tufts saw Regan lead the way with a game-high 23 points on 8-of-15 shooting and 7-of-8 from the free-throw line to hand the Jumbos their first conference loss of the year. Regan followed up with a career-high nine assists while he added eight points to his totals.
Williams –
Hudson Hansen (Bellevue, Wash.) 17.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.5 blocks, and 1.0 steals per game in a 2-0 week for the Ephs. The junior also shot 64.0 percent from the field. Hansen finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds, going 9-for-11 from the field, in an 84-41 win at SUNY Cobleskill on Tuesday. Hansen recorded 15 points and five boards, shooting 7-for-14 from the field in a 71-60 win over Bates on Friday.
