Caroline Segal Named NFHCA Division III National Scholar-Athlete

Middlebury's Caroline Segal has been named the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III National Scholar-Athlete. This award is presented annually to an NFHCA All-American who earns the highest cumulative grade point average (GPA) through the first semester of the current academic year. Segal is the second student-athlete from Middlebury to win the award since its inception in 2014.

Segal graduated summa cum laude with a 3.96 GPA in February with a degree in political science and minors in French and sociology.
She obtained internships in Washington, D.C. working for the United States Department of Commerce, the United States Department of Defense and The League of Women Voters in the United States throughout her career at Middlebury.

Segal earned a spot on both Middlebury's Scholar and Dean's Lists, while she was named to the NESCAC All-Academic Team three times. Segal composed a 130-page senior honors thesis titled "University Political Engagement: A Mess Worth Studying."

Outside the classroom, Segal was a board member and the social media chair of MiddVotes, a non-partisan organization looking to increase voter participation, civic awareness and community engagement on Middlebury's campus and in Addison County.
She also worked as a tour guide in the Admissions Office.

The forward helped lead Middlebury to its seventh-consecutive NCAA Title last fall and the fourth straight championship for Segal. The Panther secured NFHCA All-American First Team honors for the first time in her career and landed a spot on the all-region first team.  Segal helped the Panthers sweep the major conference awards by earning NESCAC Offensive Player of the Year laurels and grabbed an All-NESCAC Fisrt-Team nod.

Segal was a threat in the offensive circle for the Panthers, leading the NESCAC in goals (24) and points (57), while her 2.71 points per game placed her sixth in Division III. The captain tallied at least one point in 17 contests with 16 of those being multi-point performances.

Segal had a memorable NCAA Tournament, tallying six goals and an assist. Her hat trick in the second round against Bryn Mawr was the first of her career. She earned a spot on the NCAA All-Tournament Team after scoring twice during the championship weekend, including the game-winner in the title game.

Segal joins Charlotte Marks '24 as the two Panthers to receive the prestigious award, as Marks earned the accolade following the 2022 season.
