NESCAC Co-Players of the Week
Hank Morgan – Hamilton – Sr. – G – Caldwell, N.J.
Morgan averaged 28.0 points per game in 27.0 minutes per game while shooting 60 percent from the field as the Continentals went 2-0 and won the Stevens Institute of Technology Holiday Tournament. Morgan was named the tournament MVP. The senior guard recorded 24 points, eight rebounds, and three assists in a 72-61 win at Stevens. In the championship game, Morgan poured in a career-high 32 points and added three steals in a 78-57 victory against York (Pa.).
Henry Vetter – Trinity – Jr. – G – Kenilworth, Ill.
Vetter averaged 25.7 points, shooting 56.8 percent from the floor, including 50 percent (11-for-22) from 3-point range and 94.1 percent (16-for-17) from the foul line, with 4.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.0 steals. During the Bantams’ run to the Trinity College Holiday Tournament Championship, Vetter earned All-Tournament Team honors after leading all scorers with a game-high 25 points, shooting 8-of-13 from the floor, including 4-of-7 from 3-point range, with five rebounds, two assists, and two blocks in a win over SUNY Geneseo. The junior followed with a game-high 22 points, connecting on 6-of-11 attempts, with four rebounds, three assists, and a steal. In a double-overtime battle at Babson, logged a career-high 30 points, shooting 11-of-20 from the floor, and matched a career-high with five 3-pointers, to go with four rebounds and two assists.
NESCAC Weekly Honor Roll
Amherst –
Marc Garraud (Lynn, Mass.) played a key role in the Mammoths' two wins last week at the Naismith Classic. In an 80-62 win over UMaine-Farmington, Garraud had 13 points on 6-for-12 shooting from the floor and led the team in steals (7), rebounds (6), and assists (5). In a 73-57 win over Regis, the sophomore notched eight points with five assists and three rebounds.
Bates –
Peter Psyhogeos (Yarmouth, Maine) led the Bobcats to a pair of wins. The guard began the week with nine points on 4-of-7 shooting, handed out a career-high five assists, grabbed three rebounds, blocked a career-high three shots, and recorded a steal against Saint Joseph's (ME) on December 30. Psyhogeos followed that up with his first career double-double of 18 points and a career-high 13 rebounds in a 74-63 win over Colby on Sunday. The Bobcats have won six of their last seven games after an 0-4 start to the season, putting them at 6-5 entering NESCAC play.
Bowdoin - First-year
Ray Cuevas (Ipswich, Mass.) reached double figures in all three games over break as the Polar Bears won 2-of-3, with their only loss coming at Division I Harvard last weekend. Cuevas averaged 17.0 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 2.0 assists in the trio of games, including a game-high 22 points (including five 3-pointers) in a six-point loss to the Crimson.
Colby –
Max Poulton (Wellesley, Mass.) tallied 27 points in a win over Maine Maritime. The junior’s five 3-pointers in the first half helped the Mules build an early lead. Poulton added three more triples early in the second half and one more down the stretch for a career-high nine 3-pointers on the afternoon.
Conn. College –
Elias Espinosa (Leonia, N.J. averaged 17.3 points and 6.0 rebounds per game over a four-game stretch to lead the Camels over the holiday break. He was named MVP of the USJ Holiday Tournament after leading Conn. College to an in-season title with wins over Western Connecticut State and Farmingdale State. The junior averaged a tournament-best 21.0 points per game on 56.0 percent shooting, and his 10 3-point field goals and seven steals were also the most by any player. Espinosa also recorded 16 points and six boards against Rhode Island College and 11 points and nine rebounds against No. 12 Keene State.
Middlebury –
Sam Stevens (Mansfield, Mass.) eclipsed the 1,000 career-points plateau last week, averaging 17.3 points per game over three contests. The Panther highlighted the week leading Middlebury with 24 points in a 99-87 win over Brandeis. Stevens has 1,031 points in navy and white, which ranks 23rd in program history.
Tufts –
James Morakis (Dallas, Texas) was a leading scorer for the Jumbos through the four games surrounding the New Year. Morakis posted a 27-point performance against Clark in an 87-61 win. The junior followed up with 22 points in 28 minutes in a 71-72 loss to Nichols. Morakis drained 4-of-5 3-pointers in an 18-point outing at Yeshiva and followed it up a day later with 19 points at Widener. Morakis averaged 21.5 points and 2.5 rebounds per game over the last four contests.
Wesleyan – In the midst of the best start to a season in team history, Shane Regan (Larchmont, N.Y.) led the Cardinals to four wins as the senior averaged 17.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game while shooting 61.4 percent from the floor. Regan opened with a season-high 25 points (11-16 FG), 12 rebounds, and five assists in a win over Wentworth, registering his first career double-double. The senior added 21 points (8-12 FG) in a win at Yeshiva before recording 14 points, nine rebounds, and four assists in a home non-conference win over Amherst in a game that the Cardinals led wire-to-wire.
Williams –
Alex Lee (Houston, Texas)averaged 15.7 points during a 2-1 effort for the Ephs over the last three games. The guard scored a season-high 21 points (9-12 FG/3-6 3FG) in a 67-64 overtime victory against Kenyon on Dec. 29 at the NYU Holiday Tournament. Lee finished with 15 points (6-8 FG/2-4 3FG) in a 74-40 win at Worcester State on Saturday afternoon.
