NESCAC Player of the Week
Olivia Lai - Wesleyan - Gr. - A - Basking Ridge, N.J.
Lai was at her best in a 3-0 week for the Cardinals, recording 15 goals and one assist for 16 points (5.3 points per game) in the three games to go along with six ground balls. Lai, who is third all-time at Wesleyan in career goals, started the week with four goals and one assist to go along with a season-high four ground balls in a 16-12 win over Trinity. Lai then went for five goals on five shots in a 14-7 win over Hamilton on Saturday. The graduate student closed out the week with one of the best performances of her career, matching her career-high with six goals in a 13-10 win over William Smith at home to give the Cardinals their third win over a Top 5 ranked team this season. yan overcame a 15-11 deficit by rolling off six unanswered goals in the fourth quarter to knock off the previously unbeaten Jumbos.
NESCAC Weekly Honor Roll
Amherst –
Mia Raven (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored seven goals and added three assists last week, a 3-0 week for the Mammoths that culminated with a 15-14 victory over Babson. In those three games, Raven also contributed 25 draw controls, 18 groundballs, and eight caused turnovers. In the win over Babson, Raven had three goals, two assists, 11 draw controls, seven groundballs, and four caused turnovers. The newcomer was credited with the game-winning goal in the win over Conn. College, a game in which she also had eight draw controls and four groundballs, plus a caused turnover.
Bates –
Hannah Matthews (Westwood, Mass.) made the most of her Senior Day on Saturday against Amherst, scoring a career-high five goals in the contest.
Colby –
Julia Jardina (Louisville, Ky.) set a new career mark with six goals in a win over Bowdoin and topped it two days later with seven tallies in a win over Westfield State. The midfielder helped Colby jump in front of Bowdoin with three goals in the first half, and netted three more in the fourth quarter as Colby came from behind to defeat the Polar Bears, 14-11. Jardina’s final goal against Westfield State raised her season total to 31, another career high.
Conn. College - Junior midfield
Aine Downey (Brookline, Mass.) had a strong week, as Conn went 1-1. In a back-and-forth affair against Amherst on Wednesday night, Downey had a solid all-around game, recording one goal, while adding two ground balls, three caused turnovers, and two draw controls. On Saturday afternoon in the final non-conference game of the season, Downey tallied a game-high four goals as the Camels beat Framingham State, 17-4, recording her 100th career point in the process. Downey added eight draw controls and one ground ball in the victory. For the week, Downey notched five goals with 10 draw controls, three ground balls, and three caused turnovers.
Hamilton – Senior
Meghan Lane (Wilton, Conn.) finished a 1-2 week with 18 caused turnovers, 15 ground balls, and seven draw controls. Lane posted six caused turnovers, three draws, and two ground balls in a 12-7 win against Williams. The senior caused a career-best nine turnovers and added seven ground balls in a 14-7 setback at Wesleyan. Lane added a game-high six ground balls and caused three turnovers in an 18-10 loss at Middlebury.
Middlebury –
Susan Rowley (Dedham, Mass.) helped Middlebury pick up a pair of NESCAC victories over the weekend, tallying five points in each win. The senior played a pivotal role in helping the Panthers edge Tufts, 14-13, recording a go-ahead goal in the fourth quarter. Rowley also had four goals and an assist in an 18-10 win over Hamilton. Rowley is tied for the NESCAC lead with 44 goals this season and has recorded five or more points in six games this year, including three straight.
Trinity – Senior
Natalie Miller (Northport, N.Y.) tallied four goals last week, including the game-winning goal against Colby on Saturday to lift the Bantams to a 7-6 win. Miller registered four goals, four assists, two ground balls, and a caused turnover over two games.
Tufts - Junior attack
Ella Lesperance (Wayland, Mass.) led the Jumbos last week with a team-high 11 points on six goals and five assists. On Wednesday against Bates, Lesperance finished with eight points on four goals and four assists and then tallied two goals and an assist against Middlebury.
Williams – Junior
Claudia Russell (Danville, Calif.) scored a hat trick, to go along with an assist, against visiting Bowdoin on Saturday.
