NESCAC Player of the Week
Scott Gyimesi – Tufts – Jr. – F – Fair Haven, N.J.
Gyimesi helped Tufts to a 4-0 week. Gyimesi averaged 18.0 points, 10.5 rebounds, and 4.25 assists per game. The junior shot 66.7 percent from the floor, 50 percent from 3-point land, and 80 percent from the foul line. Against Emmanuel, Gyimesi was 10-of-14 from the field for 23 points, adding eight rebounds. In a win over No. 7 Keene State, the forward posted 23 points and 13 rebounds. Gyimesi followed that up with 20 points and 14 rebounds in a victory over Rochester and added six points, seven rebounds, and five assists in 22 minutes of action in a win over Brandeis.
NESCAC Weekly Honor Roll
Amherst –
Bobby Sommers (Southborough, Mass.) averaged 12.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 4.0 steals per game to lead the Mammoths to a 3-0 record last week. The senior scored a season-high 22 points on 7-of-11 shooting in a 77-59 win at Westfield State, adding eight rebounds, two assists, two steals, and a block. In a win over Mount St. Mary's, Sommers registered a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, adding four steals, three assists, and a block. For the week the guard shot 46.4 percent (13-of-28) from the floor.
Bates –
Peter Psyhogeos (Yarmouth, Maine) continued his strong season with three solid performances last week for the Bobcats. The junior started the week by holding Bowdoin's top scorer Ray Cuevas to a season-low four points on 2-for-7 shooting while chipping in seven points to go along with five rebounds and a season-high three assists in a 65-51 win for Bates. Psyhogeos followed that up with 11 points on 5-for-9 shooting and three steals Saturday against Brandeis. The guard capped off the week by matching his career-high with 24 points to go along with a season-high eight rebounds, two blocks, and two steals in a 72-62 win over Rochester on Sunday.
Bowdoin - Senior
James McGowan (Westwood, Mass.) averaged 12.5 points and 7.0 rebounds as the Polar Bears lost a pair of tight games to nationally-ranked Carnegie Mellon and Emory last weekend in Pittsburgh.
Colby – Senior
Jack Lawson (St. Louis, Mo.) averaged 22 points and eight rebounds at Washington University's Lopata Classic, earning all-tournament team recognition. Lawson’s 25 points against Denison tied for the second-highest tally in the senior's career.
Conn. College –
Cam Schainfeld (Newton, Mass.) averaged a team-high 10.5 points per game as the Camels went 1-1 last week. The senior netted a game-high 21 points on 7-for-11 shooting and added six assists, three steals, and two rebounds in a win at Emmanuel. Schainfeld had two steals and an assist in a loss at No. 10 NYU.
Hamilton –
Hank Morgan (Caldwell, N.J.) averaged 20.0 points and 6.0 rebounds in a 2-0 week for the Continentals. Morgan poured in a season-high 25 points and added four assists and two steals in an 87-69 win against Utica. The senior chipped in a team-best 15 points and added six boards and two steals in a 70-54 victory at St. John Fisher. Morgan shot nearly 57 percent (13-for-30) from the field in the two games.
Middlebury –
Kuba Cwalina (New York, N.Y.) was a strong contributor over all three Middlebury games last week. The guard tallied a then-career best 24 points to help Middlebury post a 76-64 win over New England College. Cwalina continued his offensive tear against No. 3 Emory, leading all scorers with a career-high 29 points on 50 percent shooting from the field and a career-best six 3-pointers made. The sophomore capped the week with his third consecutive double-figure game against No. 22 Carnegie Mellon with 15 points. Cwalina sits third in the conference in 3-point field goals made (23) and fifth in points per contest (17.0). His 29 points against Emory are also tied for the third-most in the conference this season.
Trinity –
Henry Vetter (Kenilworth, Ill.) paced the Bantams in a pair of non-conference victories over Regis College, 78-55, and Anna Maria College, 93-51, averaging 17.0 points, 6.5 assists, and 2.0 rebounds. Vetter poured in a season-high 26 points, shooting 11-of-17 from the floor, with six assists, two rebounds, two steals, and two blocks against the Pride. The junior followed up with a season-high seven assists, eight points, two rebounds, and a steal against the AMCATS.
Wesleyan –
Nicky Johnson (Lexington, Mass.) was efficient on the offensive end all week, leading the Cardinals to three road wins in 96 hours including a 57-45 win over Williams on Saturday that saw Wesleyan hold the Ephs to their lowest point total at home since 1980. Johnson averaged 16.0 points per game on 53.1 percent shooting from the floor, 42.9 percent from three, and 72.7 percent at the line. The senior added 4.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 28.6 minutes per game. Johnson opened with 15 points, four rebounds, and four assists in a win at Worcester State before netting 20 points in a road win over Lasell. Johnson closed out the week with 13 points, five rebounds, and three assists in the win over the Ephs.
Williams – Junior
Hudson Hansen (Bellevue, Wash.) tallied eight points, nine rebounds, and five assists in a 74-59 win at SUNY New Paltz on Tuesday evening.
