NESCAC Player of the Week
Scott Gyimesi – Tufts – Jr. – F – Fair Haven, N.J.
Gyimesi picked up right where he left off last season with two strong performances in a 2-0 week for Tufts. For the week, he averaged 18.0 points, 10.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists while shooting 68.2 percent from the floor in wins over Bridgewater State and Emerson. In a win over BSU, he was 4-of-8 from the floor, adding nine rebounds and nine assists. Sunday against Emerson, Gyimesi shot 11-for-14 for 23 points, adding 11 rebounds, and a steal.
NESCAC Weekly Honor Roll
Amherst –
Bobby Sommers (Southborough, Mass.) averaged 18.5 points per game last week, a 1-1 week for the Mammoths. In an 85-45 win over Western Connecticut, Sommers scored a team-high 24 points with three rebounds, three steals, an assist, and one block. The senior shot 10-for-16 from the floor, including 5-of-6 from the 3-point range. Somers finished the week with seven rebounds, four steals, three assists, and one block.
Bates –
Brady Coyne (Falmouth, Maine) lit up Ohio Wesleyan on Sunday for a career-high 29 points on 10-for-14 shooting. The junior hit 8-of-10 from 3-point range and chipped in three rebounds and three assists. Coyne finished the week shooting 11-for-17 from the floor and 9-for-12 from long distance.
Bowdoin - First-year
Ray Cuevas (Ipswich, Mass.) scored 19 points with five boards on Saturday, hitting four 3-pointers, as the Polar Bears defeated Regis College to win the Autism Acceptance Classic last weekend, going 2-0.
Colby –
Savion Stroud (Pittsburgh, Pa.) guided Colby to two victories on the season's opening weekend, averaging 13.0 points and 12.0 rebounds across two games. In the Colby Tipoff Tournament final the sophomore collected his first career double-double with a game-high 21 points and 14 rebounds. Stroud shot 10-for-12 from the floor over the weekend, adding six assists, three steals, and one block.
Conn. College –
Elias Espinosa (Leonia, N.J.) averaged a team-high 23.5 points per game and shot 41 percent from 3-point range last week as the Camels opened the season at the Greg Grant Tip-Off Tournament. The junior netted 15 points in the season opener to lead Conn. to a 73-50 win over Albright. In the title game, Espinosa dropped a career-high 32 points and hit six 3-pointers against host TCNJ. Espinosa was named to the all-tournament team.
Hamilton -
Hank Morgan (Caldwell, N.J.) was named to the Widener Tip-Off for Autism Awareness All-Tournament Team after averaging 18.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.0 steals, and shooting 60.9 percent (14-for-23) from the field and 6-for-6 at the free-throw line in two games. Morgan scored his 1,000th career point and tied a career high with five steals in an 81-54 win against the hosts. The senior added a team-high 21 points in an 84-71 setback against Stockton in the championship game.
Middlebury – Senior
Sam Stevens (Mansfield, Mass.) helped Middlebury claim a 64-63 season-opening victory over the University of Saint Joseph. With 33 seconds left in the contest, Stevens converted the game-winning layup and helped hold off the Blue Jays for the one-point triumph. The Panther led all players in the contest and in NESCAC action with 28 points, while pacing the squad with five rebounds.
Trinity –
Drew Lazarre (West Haven, Conn.) earned LaFrance Hospitality Tournament MVP honors after helping the Bantams to back-to-back tournament championships, averaging 17.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.0 steals, and 2.0 blocks. In an 81-59 win over Albertus Magnus, Lazarre netted a career-high 17 points, connecting on a career-high nine field goals, including a career-high four 3-pointers, with four rebounds, two steals, and a career-high two blocks. In a 77-62 victory against Husson in the championship game, Lazarre matched career-highs in points (17) and blocks (2) and shot a career-best 9-of-9 from the foul line with three rebounds and two steals.
Wesleyan –
Ben Lyttle's (New Rochelle, N.Y.) career game led the Cardinals to a 71-53 road win in the season opener over the weekend. Lyttle pumped in a career-high 26 points on 9-for-15 shooting with a 3-for-5 effort from 3-point range to go along with nine rebounds in 36 minutes. Making his first career start, Lyttle set a career-high in minutes played, easily besting his previous best of 23 from his rookie year, while the nine rebounds tied a career-high. Seventeen of the sophomore’s 26 points came in the first half while this marked his second career 20-point game.
Williams – Junior
Hudson Hansen (Bellevue, Wash.) posted career-highs of 21 points and 10 rebounds, shooting 8-of-11 from the field, in a 62-49 season-opening victory at SUNY Delhi.
