NESCAC Player of the Week
David Murray – Conn. College – Sr. – F/C – Jackson Heights, N.Y.
Murray averaged 20.5 points, 11.5 rebounds, 4.0 blocks, 2.5 steals, and 2.0 assists last week while leading the Camels to a pair of NESCAC wins. The senior posted a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds and totaled three blocks and four steals as Conn defeated Tufts for the Camels' first win in Medford since 2011. Murray followed up with a career-high 30 points and added 12 rebounds, five blocks, three assists, and a steal in a win at Bates. Murray shot 52.8 percent from the field for the week and raised his team-leading double-double tally to six.
NESCAC Weekly Honor Roll
Amherst –
Will Scherer (Darnestown, Md.) averaged 11.8 points and 11.0 rebounds per game over three games last week. The junior posted two double-doubles, scoring 17 points on 8-of-11 shooting and grabbing 11 rebounds in a 71-66 win over Wesleyan and scoring 10 points with 14 rebounds in a loss at Middlebury.
Bates –
Marc Begin II (Jacksonville, Fla.) nearly made history Tuesday at Saint Joseph's (ME), scoring 47 points on 17-of-33 shooting, falling one point shy of matching the Bates single-game scoring record, held by Matt Garvey '97. Begin II also grabbed eight rebounds, dished out four assists, and recorded three steals in the contest. The rookie followed Tuesday's performance up with a team-high 14 points on Sunday in the NESCAC opener against Connecticut College where the guard also recorded three assists and two steals against the Camels. Begin II leads the NESCAC in scoring at 18.7 points per game.
Bowdoin - First-year
Ben Chilson (Tunkhannock, Pa.) averaged 12.5 points per game in two conference games last weekend for the Polar Bears.
Colby –
Jack Lawson (St. Louis, Mo.) scored 19 points in a win over Maine Maritime and recorded his sixth double-double of the season in a setback at Wesleyan. The junior averaged 15.0 points and 7.3 rebounds across three games last week. Lawson's 15.6 points per game ranks ninth in the NESCAC.
Hamilton -
Garret Keyhani (Hillsborough, Calif.) averaged 21.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 1.5 blocked shots in two games last week. Keyhani poured in a career-high 26 points and added six boards and two blocks in a 70-61 win at Middlebury. The sophomore chipped in 17 points and six rebounds as the Continentals were edged at Williams, 64-63. Keyhani was 15-of-25 from the floor including 8-of-13 from 3-point range.
Middlebury –
David Brennan (Boston, Mass.) helped Middlebury claim a 70-56 victory over Amherst on Saturday. The Panther finished with 12 points and a team-high 11 rebounds for his third double-double of the season and 12th of his career. The junior has posted a double-digit rebounding total in 29 career contests and leads the NESCAC with 11.9 rebounds per game.
Trinity – Senior
Ben Callahan-Gold (New York, N.Y.) averaged 19.0 points and 6.5 rebounds per game in a pair of NESCAC victories for the Bantams. Callahan-Gold netted a game-high 20 points with eight rebounds and two assists in a victory over Colby and followed up with an 18-point, five-rebound effort in a 93-54 win over Bowdoin.
Tufts –
Scott Gyimesi (Fair Haven, N.J.) led Tufts with averages of 17.0 points, 14.5 rebounds, 5.0 assists, and 2.0 blocks while shooting 71.4 percent from the floor in two games last weekend. In conference action versus Connecticut College on Friday, the sophomore recorded 11 points, 13 rebounds, and three assists. In the non-league win over Emmanuel on Sunday, Gyimesi poured in a career-high 23 points with 18 rebounds, six assists, and three blocks.
Wesleyan –
Nicky Johnson (Lexington, Mass.) averaged 17.7 points, 6.3 assists, 5.0 rebounds, and 3.7 steals in 35.1 minutes per game last week. Johnson started with 13 points, three assists, and three rebounds at Amherst and followed with a season-high 27 points, hitting five 3-pointers, with seven assists and a career-high six steals in a 101-83 win over Bowdoin. Johnson was one assist away from becoming the first Cardinal in program history to record a triple-double in a victory over Colby. The junior finished with 13 points, 10 rebounds, nine assists, and five steals against the Mules.
Williams –
Nate Karren (Sacramento, Calif.) averaged 13.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 1.5 blocks per game as the Ephs posted a 2-0 weekend to start conference play. The senior was 5-for-12 from 3-point range and 5-of-6 from the free-throw line. In a 64-63 win over visiting Hamilton on Saturday, Karren scored 20 points, which was tied for the most in the game. He went 6-of-13 from the field, 3-for-6 on 3-pointers, and 5-of-6 from the charity stripe, to go along with five rebounds, four assists, two blocks, and one steal. The center finished with six points, five rebounds, and five assists in a 69-67 win over visiting Amherst on Friday.
