NESCAC Men's Basketball Weekly Release - Jan. 29, 2024

NESCAC Player of the Week
RJ Casey – Conn. College – So. – G – Brentwood, Tenn.
Casey, who was averaging 6.5 points per game entering last week’s games, helped Conn. College post a 2-0 record in league play. The sophomore scored a career-high 28 points on 7-for-10 shooting in a 74-59 victory over Bowdoin on Friday and then posted a game-high 21 points in an 81-53 win over Colby on Sunday. Casey averaged 24.5 points per game for the week and shot 60.9 percent from the field, 66.7 percent from 3-point range, and 15-for-16 (93.8%) from the foul line.
 
NESCAC Weekly Honor Roll
Amherst – Sophomore Chris Hammond (Los Angeles, Calif.) scored 23 points while shooting 60.0 percent from the field as the Mammoths defeated Wesleyan, 70-63. Amherst had a 1-1 week, but this was Hammond's only game of the week.

Bates – Babacar Pouye (Carpinteria, Calif.) scored a career-high 26 points on 11-of-16 shooting Saturday against Williams, draining three 3-pointers. The newcomer also grabbed seven rebounds and matched his season-high with three blocked shots. Pouye was the Bobcats' second-leading scorer the day before in a low-scoring contest against Middlebury, finishing with six points and blocking a pair of shots. The forward ranks third on the team in scoring at 9.1 points per game.

Colby – Sophomore Max Poulton (Wellesley, Mass.) scored 16 points in a setback at Conn. College on Sunday.  The performance marked the 22nd time in 24 games the sophomore tallied double digits. Poulton enters the week one point shy of 600 career points.  

Hamilton – Junior Hank Morgan (Caldwell, N.J.) averaged 21.5 points and 4.5 rebounds in two road games. Morgan tied a career-high with 30 points in an 89-83 double-overtime setback at Wesleyan and dropped in a team-high 13 points and added four boards in an 80-51 loss at undefeated Trinity. 

Middlebury – Newcomer Kuba Cwalina (Middle Village, N.Y.) averaged 11.0 points per game in a pair of NESCAC contests. The Panther was second on the team in scoring in each contest, helping Middlebury to a 61-40 victory over Bates on Friday night.

Trinity – Sophomore Henry Vetter (Kenilworth, Ill.) led the Bantams offensively in a pair of NESCAC victories over the weekend, averaging 16.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists. The sophomore netted 14 points with three rebounds and two assists in 25 minutes of action in an 80-52 victory over Hamilton. Vetter posted a game-high 18 points, shooting 6-of-11 from the floor, with four rebounds, three assists, and a steal as the Bantams defeated Amherst 62-49.

Tufts – Sophomore James Morakis (Houston, Texas) helped the Tufts men's basketball team to a pair NESCAC wins, as the Jumbos topped both Williams and Middlebury last weekend. Morakis finished the weekend averaging 17.0 points per game and 5.5 rebounds while adding 3.0 assists per game. Friday, Morakis finished with 10 points while pulling in four rebounds against Williams, and then followed that up with a game-high 24 points against Middlebury, going 9-of-14 from the field while adding seven boards and four helpers. 
 
Wesleyan – Shane Regan (Larchmont, N.Y.) averaged 21.7 points, 4.7 assists, 3.3 rebounds, and 1.3 steals in 37.5 minutes per game, leading the Cardinals to a pair of wins on the week. The junior guard started with 16 points, five rebounds, and five assists as Wesleyan blew past Yeshiva 90-56 on the road. Regan followed with 18 points and three steals on Friday against Amherst. Regan then exploded for a career-high 31 points (9-19 FG, 11-14 FT) while matching his career-high with eight assists in 48 minutes as the Cardinals earned an 89-83 double-overtime win over Hamilton. 

Williams – Nate Karren (Sacramento, Calif.) averaged 12.7 points, 6.0 assists, 5.3 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game in a 2-1 week for the Ephs. Karren scored a season-high 21 points and tallied a career-best 10 assists in an 84-69 win at Bates on Saturday afternoon. On Friday at Tufts, the senior finished with 10 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Karren finished with seven points, six rebounds, three assists, two blocks, and one steal in a 73-53 win over visiting SUNY Cobleskill on Tuesday in Chandler Gymnasium.
