NESCAC Softball Awards Announced

HADLEY, Mass – Bowdoin's Angelina Mayers and Tufts' Rachel Moore are the NESCAC Co-Players of the Year while Emily Doty of the Jumbos and Sadie Leonard of Williams are the Co-Rookies of the Year. Leonard was also named the NESCAC Pitcher of the Year and Tufts' Josie Steinberg repeats as the Defensive Player of the Year. Bates head coach Kat McKay and Colby head coach Terren Allen were voted Co-Coach of the Year by their peers. This is the first time since 2001 NESCAC individual awards have been shared in the respective categories.

Mayers is the second player from Bowdoin to earn NESCAC Player of the Year honors, joining Julia Geaumont in 2015. Mayers helped the Polar Bears earn the No. 5 seed in the NESCAC Softball Championship. The senior led the NESCAC in OPS (1.335) and RBI (48), set a Bowdoin single-season record and tied for a conference-high with 14 home runs, and ranked second in the league in runs scored (45). Mayers recorded a team-high 51 hits and finished the year hitting .412 while slugging .843.

Moore is the 12th Jumbo to garner the NESCAC Player of the Year honor and the first since 2015. The senior helped Tufts post a 17-1 record in NESCAC play and grab the top seed in the NESCAC Softball Championship. Moore owns a .447 batting average which ranks second in the NESCAC as the Jumbos head into the NCAA Tournament. A utility player for the Jumbos, Moore has started all 40 games this season, owns a team-best OPS of 1.176 and 20 of her team-high 59 hits have gone for extra bases. She has a team-high six homers, has driven in 36 runs, and crossed home plate 40 times this season.

Emilie Doty is the second Tufts player in three years and 10th overall to garner the Rookie of the Year award. Doty owns a 1.02 ERA and is 11-2 in the circle this season. She has worked 75.1 innings and struck out 95 batters. The first-year threw a perfect game in a 1-0 victory over Babson earlier this year, the first in the Tufts program since 2014.

Leonard is the fifth Eph to be named Rookie of the Year and the first since 2019. She is also the fourth Williams player to be selected as NESCAC Pitcher of the Year. In her first season at Williams, she helped the Ephs win the NESCAC Softball title for the seventh time in program history with 35 strikeouts over three tournament games. Leonard has registered 16 wins, tossed 11 complete games over 133 innings, and owns a NESCAC-best 0.68 ERA. She leads the league with 220 strikeouts and has not given up a home run in 24 appearances. Williams is headed to Salisbury, Md. for an NCAA Regional after earning the NESCAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Steinberg repeats as the NESCAC Defensive Player of the Year and this marks the third consecutive season a Jumbo has garnered the accolade. Steinberg also earned a spot on the All-NESCAC First Team for the second straight year. She has 54 putouts and ranks among the league leaders with 84 assists. Steinberg ranks third on the team with a .406 batting average and has started all 40 games for the Jumbos. She has contributed 58 hits, including 14 for extra bases, 42 RBI, and scored 43 runs for the 37-4 Tufts squad.

Bates head coach Kat McKay and Colby head coach Terren Allen are first-time winners of the NESCAC Coach of the Year honor. McKay, who is in her first year at the helm at Bates, led the Bobcats to the program's highest win total since 2018 with 16 victories. Bates, a No. 7 seed, upset No. 2 Amherst in the NESCAC Tournament for its first NESCAC postseason win. Allen, in her fifth year directing the Mules, led Colby to 24 wins and the No. 4 seed in the NESCAC Tournament. The Mules defeated Bowdoin in the quarterfinal round to record their first NESCAC postseason win since 2003.
