2023 NESCAC Field Hockey Awards Announced

HADLEY, Mass. - Middlebury's Katie George and Amy Griffin were selected as the NESCAC Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, respectively, while Bowdoin's Maddie Mrva was named the Rookie of the Year per a vote by the conference coaches. The Bates coaching staff was voted as the Coaching Staff of the Year by their peers.

George is the fourth Middlebury Panther in five years to earn a Player of the Year award and Griffin is the first Middlebury player since Meredith Rowe (2013) to be selected for the Defensive Player of the Year honor. A forward, George is tied for the league lead in goals (20), game-winning goals (4), and points (42). The senior was also selected to the All-NESCAC First Team for the third year in a row to go along with her 2019 Rookie of the Year and All-NESCAC Second Team accolades. George helped the Panthers win their sixth straight NESCAC title and 10th overall. She scored five goals and tallied 11 points in the tournament and stands third in the Middlebury record books with 67 career markers as the Panthers head into NCAA Tournament action.

Griffin, a junior, tallied eight points on four goals in the NESCAC Tournament and is tied with George with a league-best 20 goals and has 48 points on the season. Griffin also collected All-NESCAC First Team accolades for the second straight year and was the NESCAC Rookie of the Year in 2021. The Panthers stand at 18-0 and have won 26 straight games entering the NCAA Tournament.

Mrva, a midfielder who started all 16 games, is the seventh Polar Bear to be named the NESCAC Rookie of the Year. The first year finished the season ranking among the NESCAC's top 10 in assists with eight in her rookie season and added a pair of goals to finish the year with 12 points.

The Bates coaching staff has guided the Bobcats to a historic season. Under the direction of head coach Dani Kogut, Bates has notched several firsts in 2023, including earning the Coaching Staff of the Year honor from fellow NESCAC coaches. The team won its first NESCAC Tournament game with a thrilling double-overtime win over Bowdoin in the quarterfinals, advanced to the NESCAC Semifinals for the first time in program history, earned the program's first berth to the NCAA Tournament, and will host its first NCAA Tournament game when it faces Johnson & Wales on November 8. The Bobcats (12-5, 7-3 NESCAC) also posted their most NESCAC wins in school history and most overall wins since 1982.
