Middlebury & Trinity Finish NESCAC Football Season as Co-Champions

HADLEY, Mass. - The Middlebury and Trinity football programs posted wins in the regular season finale and finished the season with identical 8-1 records. The NESCAC does not break ties in football which gives the Panthers and Bantams a share of the conference title as NESCAC Co-Champions.

Middlebury topped Colby, 35-28, to earn its eighth win of the 2023 season. The Panthers claimed a share of the NESCAC Championship for the fifth time in program history. 

Colby led 7-0 after the first quarter, but the Panthers responded with 14 points in the second frame while the Mules tacked on seven more points and the teams headed into halftime knotted at 14-14. Middlebury scored 21 points in the third quarter to take a 35-14 lead, but Colby nearly completed a comeback, scoring 14 points in the final quarter to close the margin to seven points, but the Panthers were able to hold off the Mules.

Cole Kennon threw for 215 yards and scored two touchdowns, one passing and one rushing to lead the Panthers. Kennon's counterpart, Thomas Keeling led Colby with four touchdown passes and 362 yards.

Trinity eased to a 58-21 victory at Bowdoin to finish its season with an 8-1 record. The Bantams earned at least a share of the NESCAC title for the 10th time in program history since 2000.

Trinity scored 21 points in the first quarter and added 27 points in the second frame to take a 48-14 lead at the break and cruised to the win.

Trinity quarterback Spencer Fetter set a Bantam school record with seven touchdown passes as he threw for 378 yards in the contest. Tyler DiNapoli added 111 yards on the ground and Sean Clapp caught three touchdowns while totaling 241 yards on 14 receptions. Bowdoin's Robbie Long led the Polar Bears with 169 yards and Brendan King hauled in nine catches for 92 yards.
