HADLEY, Mass. – Tufts senior Phil Lutz is the NESCAC Offensive Player of the Year as voted by the league's coaches and is the third Jumbo to garner the Offensive Player of the Year (Chance Brady, 2015 & 2016 and Ryan McDonald, 2018).
Lutz led all NESCAC receivers with 78 receptions for a NESCAC record 1,221 yards, and 14 touchdowns in 2022. He averaged 8.9 receptions per game and 15.6 yards per catch and finished the season averaging 135.6 yards per game. Lutz recorded the second-most all-purpose yards in a game this season with 237 in a win over Middlebury in the season finale and also scored a NESCAC-best six touchdowns against the Panthers. Lutz was also named to the All-NESCAC First Team for the second consecutive season.
Wesleyan's Nick Helbig was voted the NESCAC Defensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. The senior is just the second Wesleyan player to earn the honor (Jack Bussani – 2014) and is the third player to garner the award in back-to-back seasons (Walter Fallas, Trinity – 2010 & 2011; Andrew Yamin, Amherst – 2017 & 2018). Helbig recorded 39 tackles (20 solo), 11.5 tackles for loss, eight sacks, and five forced fumbles. Helbig ranked second in the NESCAC in sacks (8) and led the league in forced fumbles (5). Helbig was selected for the All-NESCAC First Team Defense for the third time in his career.
Tyler DiNapoli is the sixth Trinity player to be named Rookie of the Year (Evan Bunker – 2010, Sonny Puzzo – 2013, Chris Simmons – 2014, Max Chipouras – 2015, Seamus Lambert – 2018). The first-year rushed for 489 yards (4th in NESCAC), averaging 4.8 yards per carry (5th in NESCAC), and scored five rushing touchdowns (T-2nd in NESCAC). DiNapoli averaged 69.9 rushing yards per game (2nd in the NESCAC) and racked up 744 all-purpose yards with an average of 106.3 yards per game. DiNapoli scored three touchdowns in a victory over Bates and totaled 140 yards in a win versus Colby, one of his three 100-yard rushing games this season.
Trinity head coach Jeff Devanney was selected as the NESCAC Coach of the Year by his peers. He collects the honor for the fifth time in his 17-year career at the helm of the Bantams. In 2022, Devanney led Trinity to its first 9-0 unbeaten season and 10th NESCAC title.
