Why did you choose to attend Colby?
I chose Colby because I wanted to have an equal balance between school, athletics, and extracurriculars. I love that at Colby I can race in a meet on Saturday, apple pick Sunday, and go to class on Monday. My teammates on cross country were also a huge selling point for me!
What extracurricular activities or service activities do you participate in, what are they and why or how did you get involved?
At Colby I am on the leadership council for CCAK (Colby Cares About Kids), a peer mentoring program connecting Colby students with Waterville kids in grades K-8. I became involved my freshman year because I love working with kids and had done a similar program in high school. I also became involved in our Sexual Violence Prevention program my freshman year and have been teaching SVP sessions as a peer educator. I love SVP’s mission and I knew it was a community I wanted to be a part of immediately.
What is something you enjoy doing that you never get tired of?
Running! It may be cliché but I don’t foresee myself ever getting tired of running simply because of how much I love it. This sport has brought so many incredible people and places into my life and I’m so thankful that I’m able to be a part of the running community.
What has been your favorite class outside of your major?
My favorite class outside of my major was an American Studies course on American political violence. I didn’t have any background knowledge on politics or theory but I enjoyed pushing myself in a new area. The readings were incredible and I felt like my world was turned on its head each class.
Have you studied abroad during your collegiate experience?
I studied abroad my junior spring in Stockholm, Sweden! Vad kul! I took courses on gender and sexuality in Scandinavia and history. I loved experiencing a new culture while focusing on what I am passionate about.
What has been the most interesting part of your major?
While I love my history major, my women’s, gender, and sexuality studies major opened me up to a world of literature and theory that challenges me every day. I love how outside the box our courses are. Specifically, I took a course called Critical Race Feminisms and Tap Dance which was the most WGSS thing I’ve done. The first hour of the class we learned about critical race theory and the second we all learned how to tap dance. It was so much fun and brought us all closer together as a class.
What is the greatest lesson you have learned from being a student-athlete?
The greatest lesson I’ve learned from being a student-athlete is how to build a community with a purpose. Runners come from a lot of different backgrounds and it’s been so rewarding to see how we all come together to do what we love.
What is your favorite place on your campus?
My favorite place on campus is definitely the new athletic center. I spend most of my time in the AC, but I especially love it because of how many great memories I’ve made there with my teammates.
What is something interesting about you that others might not know?
I’m an aunt! Hi Jackie and Sammy:)
What is something you enjoy doing when not in class or competing in your sport?
When I’m not in class or running you can find me cooking. I love to listen to podcasts while cooking dinner.
