Samantha Witmer was a standout softball student-athlete throughout her Trinity career, beginning with her first season in 2017-18 when she walked onto the team and earned a starting role in the outfield. As a rookie, she batted .333 and led the Bantams with a .459 on-base percentage. Witmer continued to improve steadily and batted.455 to finish second in the conference and led the NESCAC with a .556 on-base percentage in 2019. Witmer also belted 11 doubles and four triples for a .646 slugging percentage and was named to the All-NESCAC First Team and the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Region Second Team.
As a junior, Witmer was named a team captain but the Bantam softball squad was unable to play even a game before the COVID-19 pandemic ended the spring sports season in March of 2020. Witmer kept her skills intact over the next 12 months and closed her career in style. She started every game this past spring and batted a team-high .417, while reaching base safely in all 14 games. She also paced the Bantams in hits (15), doubles (6), and on-base percentage (.542). to go with four runs, a homer, eight RBI, three walks, and a .667 slugging percentage in the team’s abbreviated campaign. Witmer repeated on both the All-NESCAC First Team and the NFCA All-Region Second Team in 2021.
Witmer left her mark throughout the Trinity record book. She totaled 83 hits in 204 at-bats for a .406 batting average (2nd all-time) with 49 runs, 19 doubles, six triples, one home run, 38 RBI, a .574 slugging percentage (6th all-time), and a .525 on-base percentage (Trinity record).
She was a perennial member of the NESCAC All-Academic Team while earning her bachelor’s degree from Trinity as a double major in English and psychology. Witmer plans to pursue a master’s in athletic leadership with the hopes of starting a career in coaching. Not yet ready to hang up her cleats, she is looking to use her remaining eligibility while playing a as a graduate student.
