HADLEY, Mass. – The New England Small College Athletic Conference announced its award recipients for the 2021 men’s track & field season.
Travis Martin of Trinity won the Sabasteanski Award as the NESCAC Men’s Track & Field Most Outstanding Performer, while
Luke Botsford of Tufts was named the NESCAC Most Outstanding Rookie. The Sabasteanski Award is named in honor of the late Frank Sabasteanski, who graduated from Bowdoin and later led the cross country and track and field programs at the college for 28 years.
Martin, a sophomore from New Haven, Conn., is the top-ranked performer in the conference in the 800, 1,500, and 5,000-meter events. At the time NESCAC awards were determined, Martin ranked fifth in the country in the 800, fourth in the 1,500, and 16th in the 5,000 meters. Martin is just the third sophomore to earn the honor since 2000 and he is the first Bantam to win the award.
Botsford, a first-year athlete from Milton, Mass., posted the fastest 400m (48.85) and third-fastest 200m (21.79) times in the NESCAC and ranked inside the top 10 among rookies nationally. Botsford is undefeated in the 400m, winning by an average margin of just over one second, while going 5-1 in the 200m this season. In six meets this season, Botsford’s 11 combined victories in 200 and 400-meter races helped the Jumbos post an undefeated spring season. Botsford is the third Jumbo to be named NESCAC Rookie of the Year (Fred Jones – 2004; Mitchell Black – 2013).
The
Trinity coaching staff, led by
John Michael Mason, was voted the NESCAC Men’s Track & Field Coaching Staff of the Year by their peers. The 2021 season marks the first time the Trinity coaching staff has been honored.
In lieu of no NESCAC Championship meet being held this spring, the 2021 All-NESCAC performers were determined based on cumulative results from meets held through May 9. The individuals with the top three marks in each event listed on the NESCAC Outdoor Track & Field Performance List provided by TFRRS.org were deemed all-conference performers.
