Matthew Simco, a 6-4 wide receiver from Hollis, N.H., had a breakout sophomore season for the Cardinals in 2019. After playing in four games as a freshman and hauling in five catches for 141 yards and two touchdowns, he earned the starting nod the following year and played all nine contests while recording 44 receptions for 761 yards and six scores.
His sophomore performance earned him a spot on the 2019 All-NESCAC Second Team (Offense). Simco finished the season ranked fourth in the conference in receptions, receiving yards, receiving yards per game (84.6), and receiving touchdowns (6), and fifth in yards per catch (17.3). He also had three games with at least 100 yards receiving and was named the NESCAC Player of the Week once. One of the top highlights of the season for the Cardinals was Simco’s game-winning touchdown catch against Tufts with only six seconds remaining, giving Wesleyan a 20-13 win at home under the lights.
In addition to his success on the field, Simco was also named to the All-NESCAC Academic Team in his first year of eligibility for the award. His academic and athletic excellence also earned him a spot on the 2019 CoSIDA Academic All-District Team®. The economics and physics major completed his sophomore year with a 3.88 cumulative GPA. He also works in the Athletic Communications office and helps with website maintenance.
