Women's Tennis All-NESCAC Selections Announced
HADLEY, Mass. – Wesleyan senior Eudice Chong (Sai Kung, Hong Kong) is the NESCAC Player of the Year for the second straight year and third time in her career. She is the only Cardinal to earn the honor and the second player in league history to win the award in three times. Chong, the three-time defending NCAA Champion, is 22-0 versus Division III competition this season as the No. 1 player for the Cardinals. She is one of the most decorated players in NESCAC history, earning Rookie of the Year honors in 2015 in addition to four straight First Team singles and doubles accolades. Chong leads the Cardinals into the NCAA Championship which begins on May 10.
Wesleyan senior Victoria Yu (New Braunfels, Texas) is an All-NESCAC First Team doubles selection, combining with Chong for a 28-2 record. Chong and Yu are the defending NCAA Champions and won the ITA Oracle Cup doubles title this fall. It is the second straight First Team doubles selection for Yu. She also earned Second Team singles honors for the third year in a row, posting a 15-5 record playing No. 1 and No. 2 singles.
Seniors Julia Cancio (Concord, Mass.) and Juli Raventos (San Jose, Costa Rica) are First Team doubles selections for Williams. The duo helped the Ephs capture their fourth NESCAC title in a row to earn a trip to the NCAA Tournament. The pair posted a 25-2 record, including an unbeaten mark of 15-0 during the spring season, at No. 1 doubles for the Ephs. Cancio was a First Team doubles selection in 2015. Raventos was also selected as a First Team singles honoree for the fourth time and owns a 22-6 record as the No. 1 player for the Ephs. Raventos, the 2016 NESCAC Player of the Year, also earned First Team doubles in 2016 and Second Team doubles in 2015.
Tufts juniors Mina Karamercan (Istanbul, Turkey) and Otilia Popa (San Diego, Calif.) were honored as a First Team doubles squad. Together they posted an 18-8 record at No. 1 doubles for the Jumbos. Karamercan is also a First Team singles selection and has a 21-6 mark playing No. 1-2-3 on the ladder for Tufts this season. Karamercan, the 2016 NESCAC Rookie of the Year, is a First Team singles honoree for the third straight season and receives First Team doubles honors for the third year in a row.
Camille Smukler (Villanova, Pa.), the 2017 Rookie of the Year, is a First Team singles selection for the first time after earning Second Team singles honors last year. The sophomore plays No. 1 singles for the Mammoths and posted a 22-8 record, which included a 10-2 mark during the fall, helping Amherst earn a bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Bowdoin’s Tess Trinka (Oak Park, Ill.) earns the Senior Sportswoman Award and is the second Polar Bear to earn the honor, joining Sarah D’Elia (2009). Trinka also moved up to the First Team singles after earning Second Team singles recognition in 2015 and 2017. She was also a Second Team doubles selection in 2016. Trinka went 17-8 playing at No. 1 for Bowdoin this season.
Katherine Hughes (Haddonfield, N.J.) of Middlebury rounds out the First Team singles honorees and earns her first All-NESCAC honor. Hughes earned 18 wins playing No. 1 and No. 2 for the NCAA-bound Panthers.
Tufts first-year Patricia Obeid (New York, N.Y.) is the NESCAC Rookie of the Year. She is the third Jumbo to earn the honor, joining Julia Browne (2008) and teammate Mina Karamercan (2016). Obeid, also a Second Team singles honoree, won eight matches at No. 1 singles for Tufts this season.
Tufts head coach Kate Bayard was selected as the NESCAC Coach of the Year by her peers. It is the third time in her 13 years at the helm of the Jumbos she has been recognized with the honor, also earning Coach of the Year in 2009 and 2011. Bayard led the Jumbos to a 12-6 record and a berth in the NCAA Tournament.
