NESCAC Cross Country All-Conference Teams Announced
HADLEY, Mass. – Amherst seniors Mohamed Hussein (Hargeisa, Somaliland) and Nicky Roberts (North Reading, Mass.) were named the NESCAC Most Outstanding Performers following the 2017 NESCAC Cross Country Championships hosted by Bates on Saturday. The annual honor is given to the individuals who finished first at the conference championship meet.Hussein, who also won the race in 2015 as a sophomore, claimed his second NESCAC Championship. He is the only Mammoth to win the honor and is the first repeat honoree since Hamilton’s Peter Kosgei won four straight races from 2007-2010. Hussein also earns his third consecutive All-NESCAC First Team honor.
- Amherst won its first NESCAC Men’s Cross Country title by placing three runners among the top-five finishers. Joining Hussein on the All-NESCAC First Team were junior Cosmo Brossy and sophomore Clark Ricciardelli. Brossy earns All-NESCAC honors for the second straight season after being a Second Team selection last year. Ricciardelli collects his first All-NESCAC honor.
- The Connecticut College duo of junior Scott Mason and sophomore Danny Aschale finished 2-3, respectively. Mason edged out his teammate by six seconds. Aschale was an All-NESCAC Second Team honoree last fall.
- Bates senior Zach Magin’s sixth-place finish led the Bobcats to third place in the team standings, the best conference finish for the program since 2011. Magin picks up All-NESCAC honors for the first time.
- Junior Harrison Knowlton of Middlebury rounded out the top seven finishers and earned All-NESCAC honors for the first time in his career. Fellow Panther Matt D’Aquila was the top first-year runner in the men's race and grabbed Rookie of the Year honors, as well as a spot on the All-NESCAC Second Team. He is the first Middlebury runner to earn the honor.
- Steve Rubin was selected as the NESCAC Men's Coach of the Year in his first season with the Mammoths. It marks the second straight season an Amherst coach has been recognized with the award.
- Roberts helped Amherst sweep the individual titles at the NESCAC Championships and earned Most Outstanding Performer honors from the women's race. She is the seventh Mammoth to earn the honor overall.
- Williams captured its third straight NESCAC title and 16th overall on the strength of three runners in the top-14. The Ephs were led by senior Victoria Kingham. The 2014 Rookie of the Year, finished as the runner-up and earned her fourth All-NESCAC honor with a spot on the First Team this year. Kingham was a First Team honoree in 2015 and garnered a spot on the Second Team in 2014 and 2016.
- The Tufts duo of senior Brittany Bowman and junior Natalie Bettez repeated as First Team honorees, finishing 5-6, respectively, to lead the Jumbos to a third-place finish.
- Colby senior Caitlin Lawlor, an All-NESCAC Second Team selection last season, finished third overall this year to move up to the First Team and earn her second conference honor.
- Junior Katherine MacCary led the Panthers to runner-up honors in the team standings. She was the first Middlebury runner across the finish line, placing seventh to round out the All-NESCAC First Team honorees.
- Senior Katherine Cook led Bates to a fourth-place finish as she placed fourth overall to earn her second consecutive All-NESCAC honor. She was a Second Team honoree last fall. The Bobcats have finished among the top four teams four times in the last six years. Teammate Abby Hamilton was the first rookie to cross the finish line in the women’s race to earn Rookie of the Year honors. She is the first Bobcat to garner the award.
- Williams head coach Peter Farwell was named the NESCAC Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year. He earns the award for the sixth time in the 17 years he has been at the helm of the women’s program. He most recently won the award in 2012.
