HADLEY, Mass. - Following the completion of the NESCAC Men’s and Women’s Track & Field Championships this past Saturday at Amherst College, the NESCAC has announced its 2016 all-conference teams. The top three finishers in each event during the championship receive All-NESCAC recognition.

Tufts senior Alexis Harrison (Toms River, N.J.) was a repeat winner of the Sabasteanski Award as the Most Outstanding Female Performer after receiving the award last year. Harrison won three individual events at the NESCAC Championships, and was a member of a winning relay to help the Jumbos finish in third place. She established a new NESCAC Championship record of 11.88 seconds in the 100-meter dash when she won the event for the second straight year, and later ran the anchor leg of the first-place 4x100-meter relay, which turned in a time of 47.92 seconds to set a new championship meet benchmark. Harrison also successfully defended her title in the long jump, recording a distance of 18’ 6” (5.64m). She also won the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.40 seconds. Harrison is the fourth NESCAC women’s track & field athlete to receive the accolade multiple times, joining Tufts’ Kelly Allen (2011, 2013), Williams’ Elise Johnson (2009, 2010) and Bates’ Keelin Godsey (2005, 2006).

Tufts senior Mitchell Black (Brunswick, Maine) won the Sabasteanski Award as the Most Outstanding Male Performer. Black started the championship by winning the 1,500-meter run with a time 3:52.28, and later crossed the finish line first in the 800-meter run with a mark of 1:51.36 to help the Jumbos earn second place in the team standings. He is the third Jumbo to earn the award along with Graham Beutler, who was named Most Outstanding Male Co-Performer in 2013, and Greg Devine, who garnered the accolade in 2002.

The Sabasteanski Award is named in honor of the late Frank Sabasteanski, who graduated from Bowdoin and later led the cross country and track and field programs at the college for 28 years.

Rookie Most Outstanding Performer honors went to Denver Williams (Washington, D.C.) of Williams and Alex Tomcho (Windsor, Conn.) of Trinity. Williams captured second place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.47 seconds, which was .07 seconds behind first place, and third place in the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.39 seconds. She was also a member of the 4x100-meter relay, which finished fourth (48.51). Williams is the second straight Williams women’s track & field athlete to receive the recognition, joining Kate Kennedy. Tomcho took second place in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes, and missed first place in each event by a combined three-hundredths of a seconds. He crossed the finish line in the 100-meter dash in 10.84 seconds, and clocked a time of 21.87 seconds in the 200-meter dash. Tomcho is the first Trinity men’s track & field athlete to earn the award.

Martin Beatty’s staff earned Women’s Track & Field Coaching Staff of the Year for the first time after leading Middlebury to a second-place finish with 140 points behind the strength of six event crowns. Beatty was also named the NESCAC Coach of the Year in 2011 and NESCAC Co-Coach of the Year in 2009. The Tufts men’s coaching staff, led by head coach Joel Williams, was selected as the Men’s Track & Field Coaching Staff of the Year. Williams, in his first season with the Jumbos, guided Tufts to a runner-up finish after winning six events and tallying 182 points. The Jumbo men’s coaching staff was also recognized in 2013 and 2015.
