Middlebury's Winslow Named Player of the Year

HADLEY, Mass. – Sophomore forward Maddie Winslow (Manchester, Vt.) of Middlebury has been selected by the conference coaches as the 2016 NESCAC Player of the Year. In 16 conference games this season, Winslow led all league players in points and assists with 24 and 13, respectively. She was also tied for second in NESCAC play with 11 goals, three of which were power-play goals. Winslow helped the Panthers to an 18-4-3 overall record and a 13-0-3 mark in NESCAC play en route to being the sixth Middlebury player to be named Player of the Year, joining former Panthers Emily Fluke (2015), Annmarie Cellino (2008), Abby Kurtz-Phelan (2007), Emily Quizon (2005, 2006) and Angela Kapus (2003).

  • Nine players are making their first appearance on the All-NESCAC Teams. Only one player on the First Team is a repeat all-conference honoree.
  • Three Middlebury, Amherst and Hamilton players received All-NESCAC recognition, while Connecticut College had two players garner all-conference accolades. Bowdoin also had one player land on the all-conference teams.
  • Amherst sophomore Alex Toupal was selected to the First Team for the first time in career after leading all NESCAC players with 14 goals, including a league-high five game-winning markers, in 15 league games. The forward also played a key role on Amherst’s penalty-kill unit, as she tallied three short-handed goals. Toupal was not just a goal scorer, as she dished out eight assists to wrap up conference play ranked second in points with 22.
  • Forward Ari Bourque of Bowdoin closed out her collegiate career on the All-NESCAC First Team. The senior posted eight goals and five assists for 13 points in 16 league games to tie for sixth in points among conference skaters. An all-around player who was a member of the Polar Bear power-play and penalty-kill units, Bourque netted two game-winners and blocked 36 shots.
  • Amherst defender Caitlyn Ryan was elevated to the First Team after being named to the Second Team in 2015. The junior paced all defenders in points and assists with ten and nine, respectively, during conference competition. She also anchored a defense that allowed only 17 goals in 16 NESCAC contests.
  • Connecticut College junior Julie Beattie landed on the All-NESCAC First Team for the first time in her career. The defender helped the Camels rank third in league play holding opponents to 1.62 goals per game. Beattie was tied for third among defenders with seven points on four goals and three assists in 16 NESCAC games.
  • Katherine Chester of Connecticut College also garnered all-conference recognition for the first time. The junior netminder was among the league leaders between the pipes this season. Chester posted a 1.55 goals against average, a .949 save percentage and three shutouts after playing in all 16 conference games.
  • Connecticut College’s Jordan Cross has been selected as the NESCAC Rookie of the Year by the league’s coaches. The forward led all rookies in scoring with 12 points on six goals and six assists in 16 conference games. She also paced the league with four power-play goals in NESCAC play. Cross is the second Camel to receive the award, joining Courtney Dumont (2011).
  • Bill Mandigo of Middlebury has been named NESCAC Coach of the Year for the third time in his 28 years at the helm. Mandigo, who received the award in 2004 and 2011, guided the Panthers to a 13-0-3 record in league play en route to their sixth consecutive No. 1 seed in the NESCAC Championship. Since January 15, Middlebury has won 13 of its last 14 games to carry an 18-4-3 overall record into the remaining rounds of the NESCAC Women’s Ice Hockey Championship this weekend, which will be hosted by the Panthers.
