Track & Field All-Conference Teams Announced
HADLEY, Mass. - Following the completion of the NESCAC Men’s and Women’s Track & Field Championships this past Saturday at Williams College, the NESCAC has announced its 2015 all-conference teams. The top three finishers in each event during the championship receive All-NESCAC recognition.
Wesleyan senior LaDarius Drew (Mesquite, Texas) was a repeat winner of the Sabasteanski Award as the Most Outstanding Male Performer after garnering the award last year. Drew scored 28 points for the Cardinals in individual events for the second consecutive year. He successfully defended his title in the long jump after posting a mark of 23’ 4.75” (7.13m). Drew also took first place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.92 seconds, and later finished second in the 200-meter dash after clocking a time of 22.11 seconds. He is the only Cardinal to have won the award. The Sabasteanski Award is named in honor of the late Frank Sabasteanski, who graduated from Bowdoin and later led the cross country and track and field programs at the college for 28 years.
Tufts junior Alexis Harrison (Toms River, N.J.) was named the Sabasteanski Award winner as the Most Outstanding Female Performer. Harrison won two individual events, and was a member of a winning relay to help the Jumbos finish in second place. She established a new NESCAC Championship record in the 100-meter dash when she won the event in 12.04 seconds, and later ran the anchor leg of the first-place 4x100-meter relay, which turned in a time of 48.26 seconds. Harrison won the long jump with a distance of 18’ 6.25” (5.65m). She also took second place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.14 seconds. Harrison is the third Jumbo to receive the accolade, joining Kelly Allen (2011, 2013) and Logan Crane (2009) on the list of previous Tufts winners.
Rookie Most Outstanding Performer honors went to Brian Sommers (Acton, Mass.) of Colby and Kate Kennedy (London, England) of Williams. Sommers won the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.01 seconds, and was third in the 200-meter dash (22.38). He also ran the anchor leg of the third-place 4x400-meter relay that crossed the finish line in 3:12.45. Sommers is the first Colby men’s track & field athlete to earn the award. Kennedy captured first place in the 400-meter hurdles with a winning time of 1:03.07. In addition to finishing fourth in the 100-meter hurdles (14.99), she anchored the winning 4x400-meter relay, which clocked a time of 3:53.00. Kennedy is also the first Williams women’s track & field athlete to garner the recognition.
Ethan Barron’s staff earned Men’s Track & Field Coaching Staff of the Year for the second time after leading Tufts to its third consecutive men’s track and field championship, having also received the award in 2013. Barron was also named the NESCAC Coach of the Year in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2010. The Williams women’s coaching staff, led by second-year head coach Nate Hoey, was selected as the Women’s Track & Field Coaching Staff of the Year. Hoey and his staff led the Ephs to back-to-back conference championships following a 170-point performance.
