Women's Basketball All-Conference Teams Released
Kanner of Tufts Selected as Player of the
Year
HADLEY, Mass. - Senior forward
Hayley Kanner (Scarsdale, N.Y.) of Tufts has been
voted by the conference coaches as the 2015 NESCAC Player of the
Year. Kanner helped the Jumbos post an unblemished conference
record in back-to-back seasons, as Tufts won its second straight
conference crown en route to its seventh overall NCAA Tournament
berth. She joins Khalilah Ummah (2008) as the only
Tufts women’s basketball players to earn the award.
Kanner, who was elevated to the First Team after being selected
to the Second Team last season, averaged 13.2 points and 5.7
rebounds per game to go along with a league-best 67 blocks and the
fourth-best field goal percentage (50.2).
NESCAC Runner-Up Bowdoin landed a pair of players on the First
Team in senior Sara Binkhorst (West Hartford,
Conn.) and junior Shannon Brady (Scituate, Mass.).
Binkhorst is a repeat first-team all-conference selection, and
ranks seventh among league players with 14.5 points per game and
fourth with 3.4 assists per game. Binkhorst is also one of the top
shooters in the league, sitting in third in three-point field goal
and free-throw percentage at 41.7 percent and 87.3 percent,
respectively. Brady moved up to the First Team after being a 2014
Second Team All-NESCAC pick and the 2012 Rookie of the Year. She is
sixth in the NESCAC in scoring at 14.6 points to go along with 6.5
rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game for the Polar Bears, who are
making their 15th overall NCAA appearance.
Williams senior Ellen Cook (Eugene, Ore.)
received First Team recognition for the second consecutive year.
Cook ranks eighth in scoring with 14.2 points per game, while
ranking tenth in assists at 2.8 per contest for the Ephs, who are
making their fifth trip to the NCAA Tournament in six seasons.
Rounding out the First Team is first-time all-conference honoree
Sam Graber (Roseland, N.J.) of Hamilton. The
junior forward leads the NESCAC in scoring with 17.6 points per
game, ranks third in rebounding (9.5) and sits in fifth in steals
(1.8). Graber scored 20 points or more in 11 games this season for
the Continentals.
Williams’ Cook and Bowdoin first-year Kate
Kerrigan (Wellesley Hills, Mass.) were chosen as NESCAC
Co-Defensive Players of the Year. Cook is the only player in the
NESCAC to rank in the top ten in steals and blocks, as she is
fourth in total steals (45) and tied for tenth in total blocks
(22). Kerrigan tallied a league-best 60 steals to go along with 5.4
rebounds per game at guard. This marks the second time that
co-defensive players have been named, as it previously happened in
2007. Cook is the third Eph to garner the award, joining
Kerri McMahon (2003) and Kaylan
Tindsley (2007). Kerrigan is the third Polar Bear to be
selected along with three-time honoree Justine
Pouravelis (2004-06) and Katie Cummings
(2007).
Connecticut College first-year Mairead Hynes
(Mahopac, N.Y.) became the first player in program history to be
named NESCAC Rookie of the Year. She made her impact felt
immediately at the collegiate level as the only conference player
to average a double-double, ranking second in both points (16.9)
and rebounds (10.4). Hynes also owns the sixth-best field goal
percentage in the league at 48.3 percent.
Carla Berube of Tufts has been chosen by her
coaching peers as Coach of the Year for the third time in four
years and fifth overall. In her 13th season, she guided the Jumbos
to a perfect conference record for the second straight season
before successfully defending their conference title this past
weekend. Berube was previously recognized in 2007, 2008, 2012 and
2014.
