Baseball All-Conference Teams Released
Amherst's Odenwaelder Named Player of the
Year
HADLEY, Mass. - Amherst sophomore
Mike Odenwaelder (Goshen, Conn.) has been chosen
by the conference coaches as the NESCAC Player of the Year.
Odenwaelder becomes Amherst’s third Player of the Year
selection, joining Mike Samela (2011) and
Bob Cook (2012). He is the first player in league
history to be named Rookie of the Year and Player of the Year in
back-to-back seasons, and is the second player to ever receive both
awards along with Williams’ Jabe Bergeron.
The Jeffs finished second in the NESCAC East standings, compiling a
record of 9-3 in divisional play and 28-9 overall record en route
to earning their second straight at-large bid into the NCAA
Championship and setting the program’s single-season win
mark.
In addition to being named Player of the Year, Odenwaelder was
selected to the All-Conference First Team for the second
consecutive season. Odenwaelder leads the league with a .406
batting average and .633 slugging percentage. He is among the
conference leaders in several other categories with 52 hits (2nd),
six home runs (T-2nd), 33 runs, 12 stolen bases (T-5th), 30 RBI
(T-5th) and a .447 on-base percentage (7th). He also posted a 1.74
earned run average in 20.2 innings on the mound, while striking out
21 batters and recording a 2-1 record.
Joining Odenwaelder on the First Team from the Jeffs are senior
Taiki Kasuga (New York, N.Y.) and junior
John Cook (Winnetka, Ill.). Kasuga, the 2013
NESCAC Defensive Player of the Year, earned first-team recognition
for the first time in his career after being named to the Second
Team last season. The shortstop posted a fielding percentage of
.949 in 177 chances, turning ten double plays in the process. His
113 assists rank second in the NESCAC. He also ranks third in hits
(51) and is tied for fifth in doubles (11), sixth in batting
average (.359) and seventh in runs (30). Cook garnered All-NESCAC
accolades for the first time in his career after posting the
fourth-best ERA in the conference at 2.10. He has posted a record
of 4-3 in nine appearances, while ranking fourth with 62 strikeouts
and walking just five batters.
NESCAC champion Wesleyan placed two members on the First Team.
Junior centerfielder Donnie Cimino (Westwood,
N.J.) earned First Team honors for the second straight season after
being elevated from the Second Team in 2012. Cimino, who has a .333
batting average, paces the conference with 39 runs, ranks fourth
with 49 hits and is tied for third with 15 stolen bases. He is also
tied for second among league players with 147 at-bats, yet recorded
just 14 strikeouts. Junior Sam Goodwin-Boyd
(Florence, Mass.) lands on the First Team after receiving Second
Team honors last season. The first baseman leads the conference
with 37 RBI, and has used four home runs and 11 doubles to help
register the NESCAC’s fifth-highest slugging percentage at
.522. He has also scored 28 runs for the Cardinals heading into the
NCAA Championship.
NESCAC Runner-Up Tufts matched Amherst with three players making
the First Team, including the Pitcher of the Year. Junior hurler
Kyle Slinger (Danville, Calif.) paces the league
with 67.0 innings pitched, eight wins and a paltry 1.21 ERA. The
first-time all-conference selection also ranks second with 64
strikeouts, while limiting opponents to a .184 batting average.
Slinger becomes the third Jumbo pitcher to be named NESCAC Pitcher
of the Year, joining Ed Bernstein (2011) and
Jon Lee (2001, 2003). Senior catcher Nick
Cutsumpas (White Plains, N.Y.) managed the
conference’s top pitching staff, which owns a league-low 2.51
ERA. He has thrown out nine stolen base attempts, while also
recording a .257 batting average and 22 RBI to earn all-conference
recognition for the first time in his collegiate career. Sophomore
Matt Moser (Great Falls, Va.) joins the list of
first-time All-NESCAC honorees. The shortstop is second in the
league with 36 runs driven in and ninth with ten doubles.
Defensively, he has tallied a conference-best 115 assists and 21
double plays, while boasting a .947 fielding percentage.
Griff Tewksbury (Concord, N.H.) of Bates returned
to the First Team after being named to the First Team in 2012. The
senior designated hitter ranks in the top ten of numerous offensive
categories with a .579 slugging percentage (3rd), 31 RBI (4th), a
.461 on-base percentage (5th), 46 hits (6th), 31 runs (6th) and a
.346 batting average (T-8th). Tewksbury is also tied for second
with six home runs, adding nine doubles and drawing 24
walks.
Rounding out the First Team is Bowdoin junior Aaron
Rosen (Morganville, N.J.) and Colby junior Jason
Buco (Methuen, Mass.). Both players were previously named
to All-NESCAC Second Teams before moving up to the First Team.
Rosen, a 2013 Second Team pick, paced the conference with 15
doubles and is seventh in slugging percentage (.496). The infielder
was also second on his team with a .331 batting average, a .396
on-base percentage and 42 hits. Buco, who was named to the Second
Team in 2012, leads the league with seven home runs and is second
with a .615 slugging percentage. The outfielder paced the Mules
with a solid .327 batting average, 34 hits and 23 runs.
Tufts pitcher Tim Superko (Wellesley, Mass.) has
been chosen as the NESCAC Rookie of the Year, becoming the fourth
pitcher in the last five years to garner the accolade. He is third
in the league with a 1.90 ERA in 52.0 innings of work. Superko also
ranks eighth with 49 strikeouts to go along with a 4-1 record and
two saves. He joins Chase Rose (2008) as the only
Jumbos to have received the award.
Tufts centerfielder Connor McDavitt (Holden,
Mass.) has been selected as the NESCAC Defensive Player of the
Year. He is the third Jumbo to earn the honor in the last five
seasons along with Matt Collins (2011) and
Alex Perry (2010). The junior yielded just one
error in 93 opportunities for a .989 fielding percentage, while
throwing out five runners on the base paths.
For the second straight season, Wesleyan head coach Mark
Woodworth was voted as the Coach of the Year by his peers.
He also earned the honor in 2002. Woodworth guided Wesleyan to its
first NESCAC Championship in program history after earning the top
seed in the NESCAC West Division with a 10-2 mark. After reaching
the conference final last year, Wesleyan defeated Tufts in title
tilt to earn the Cardinals’ second overall trip to the NCAA
Championship and first since 1994 with a 27-11 overall record.
Wesleyan’s 27 wins are the second-most in program history
behind the 30 wins registered in 1994.
