HADLEY, Mass. - Bates won
the women's grand final, while the
Williams men were third during the 2014
ECAC-National Invitational Rowing Championships (NIRC) on Sunday at
Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass. By finishing as the top team
from the NESCAC, the Bobcat women won their first NESCAC Rowing
Championship, while the Eph men won the NESCAC Men's Rowing
Championship for the sixth consecutive year.
In the women's grand final, Bates crossed the finish in a time of
6:51.316, more than three seconds faster than second place finisher
and NESCAC-foe Williams (6:54.993).
Trinity and Wesleyan were the
other NESCAC institutions represented in the grand final, placing
third and fifth, respectively, with times of 6:56.631 and
7:05.908.
The Bobcats had finished as runners-up the past three seasons.
Although Williams was edged by Hobart and Michigan in the
men’s grand final by more than six seconds, the Ephs still
clinched the NESCAC title as being the top school from the
conference. Williams posted a time of 6:04.696, less than a second
ahead of fourth-place Ithaca and nearly 14 seconds faster than the
next NESCAC school Bates (6:18.500). The
Bobcats were the only other NESCAC institution competing in the
grand final.
With its performance, Williams captured its sixth NESCAC crown in
a row and seventh all-time.
The Bates women's rowing team will receive an automatic invitation
to the NCAA rowing championships at Eagle Creek Park in
Indianapolis, Indiana May 30-31. Williams will look for an at-large
bid after having won the last eight national titles and own nine
overall NCAA crowns.
