HADLEY, Mass. - Following the completion of the NESCAC Men's and Women's Track and Field Championships this past Saturday at Colby College, the NESCAC has announced its 2014 All-Conference Teams. The top three finishers in each event during the championship receive All-Conference recognition.

Wesleyan junior LaDarius Drew (Mesquite, Texas) received the Sabasteanski Award as the Most Outstanding Male Performer. Drew earned 28 of the Cardinals’ 42 total points, as he won two individual events and placed second in another. Drew crossed the finish line first in the 200-meter Dash with a time of 22.38 seconds and took top honors in the Long Jump with a distance of 21’ 10” (6.65m). He also finished second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.06 seconds. Drew is the first Wesleyan male track and field athlete to receive the Sabasteanski Award. The award is named in honor of the late Frank Sabasteanski, who graduated from Bowdoin and later led the cross country and track and field programs at the college for 28 years.

Williams senior Amina Avril (Decatur, Ga.) was named the Sabasteanski Award winner as the Most Outstanding Female Performer. Avril won three events to lead the Ephs to their 21st NESCAC Championship. Avril’s three victories included a 44’ 1.25” throw (13.44m) in the Shot Put, a distance of 128’ 6” (39.18m) in the Discus, and a mark of 181’ 3” (55.25m) in the Hammer Throw. Her win in the Hammer Throw was the second of her career, having won the title in 2012. Avril is the seventh female Eph to earn the accolade, and the first since 2010 when Elise Johnson won the second of back-to-back awards.

Rookie Most Outstanding Performer honors went to Alex Nichols (Brunswick, Maine) of Middlebury and Karen Blake (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) of Amherst. Nichols won the 400-meter Dash, was a member of the first-place 4x400-meter Relay and placed fourth in the 200-meter Dash. Nichols is the fifth Panther to receive the award. Teammate Peter Hetzler was the most recent recipient when he garnered the award in 2011. Blake won the 100-meter Dash, and broke the meet record set in 2002 with a preliminary time of 12.13 seconds. She also placed fourth in the 200-meter Dash and ran the anchor leg of the fourth-place 4x100-meter Relay. Blake is the second Amherst female to earn the recognition, joining Shaueen Garrahan, who earned the award in 2004.

Martin Beatty
’s staff at Middlebury earned Men’s Track and Field Coaching Staff of the Year. Beatty was the Coach of the Year in 2005 and collected his second honor with his staff after leading Middlebury to a second-place showing, its best-ever finish at the NESCAC Championships with 166.5 points. The Williams women’s coaching staff, led by first-year head coach Nate Hoey, was selected as the Women’s Track and Field Coaching Staff of the Year. Hoey along with his staff led the Ephs to their 21st overall conference championship following a 179-point performance.
