Brickley of Trinity Named Player of the Year

HADLEY, Mass. - Senior forward Hannah Brickley (Melrose, Mass.) of Trinity has been chosen by the conference coaches as the 2014 NESCAC Player of the Year. Brickley, the first women’s basketball player from Trinity to earn the honor, helped her team to a program-best 7-3 record in conference play this season, as it hosted its first NESCAC quarterfinal game and advanced to the NESCAC semifinal round for the second time in program history. She averaged 14.0 points and 8.2 rebounds per game, as both statistics ranked fourth among league players. This is the first All-NESCAC recognition for Brickley in women’s basketball as she was also named First Team All-NESCAC in volleyball this past season.

Bates senior Meredith Kelly (Cohasset, Mass.) also received First Team honors for the first time in her career after being named Rookie of the Year in 2011. The guard leads the league in scoring with 21.6 points per game, which is nearly six points ahead of the next player, while recording 6.0 rebounds per game and shooting 81.0 percent from the free throw line. After pacing the conference in steals per game (2.83), she also became the first Bates player to be named the Defensive Player of the Year.

Bowdoin junior Sara Binkhorst (West Hartford, Conn.) averaged 13.0 points per game for the NCAA-bound Polar Bears. Binkhorst shoots a conference-best 47.2 percent from three-point range, and ranks third in free throw percentage (.882). She helped lead the Polar Bears to their first NCAA appearance since 2012 and 14th appearance overall.

Williams junior Ellen Cook (Eugene, Ore.) was all over the floor for the Ephs this season, as they are making their fourth trip to the NCAA Tournament in five seasons with an overall record of 20-5. Cook ranks among the league leaders in nearly every statistical category, including second in steals (2.40), fourth in assists (3.76) and blocked shots (1.48) and fifth in scoring (14.0).

Rounding out the First Team is Tufts junior guard Kelsey Morehead (Foster City, Calif.), who directed an offense that scored 67.4 points per game and aided the Jumbos in finishing the conference schedule undefeated before winning the NESCAC Championship and posting an overall record of 26-1. Morehead dished out 3.3 assists per game, while registering a 2.6 assist-to-turnover ratio in nearly 34 minutes per game.

Amherst first-year Ali Doswell (Richmond, Va.) garnered Rookie of the Year accolades. Doswell has played a large role in helping the Jeffs post a 24-3 record and reach the NCAA Tournament for an eighth consecutive season, as the guard is averaging 10.8 points and 6.1 rebounds per game. She is the fifth Amherst player to earn the honor and first since Megan Robertson was recognized in 2012.

Tufts’ Carla Berube was selected by her coaching peers as Coach of the Year for the fourth time in her career. Berube, who is in her 12th season, was previously recognized in 2007, 2008 and 2012. She led the Jumbos to an unblemished conference record en route to the program’s first NESCAC title this past weekend and its sixth overall NCAA Tournament berth.
