Men's Soccer All-Conference Selections Unveiled
Middlebury's Conrad Receives Player of the Year
Honor
HADLEY, Mass. – Middlebury sophomore
forward Greg Conrad (Peabody, Mass.) has been
selected as the 2014 NESCAC Player of the Year by the
league’s coaches. Conrad is tied for a conference-best 22
points, and tied for second among all NESCAC players with eight
goals and six assists. His best performance of the season came in
the Panthers’ final conference contest when he scored three
goals against Wesleyan in a 3-1 decision to help Middlebury clinch
home field advantage in the NESCAC quarterfinals. Conrad is the
fourth player in program history to garner NESCAC Player of the
Year honors, joining John Giannacopoulos (1999), Brian Bush (2008)
and Harrison Watkins (2010).
During the season, Conrad teamed up with sophomore forward
Adam Glaser (Washington, D.C.) to form the most
dynamic scoring duo in the league for the Panthers. Glaser, the
2013 NESCAC Rookie of the Year and a two-time First Team selection,
sits third in the league with 21 points to go along with eight
goals. Rounding out the list of forwards named to the First Team
are Tufts senior Maxime Hoppenot (Princeton, N.J.)
and Williams senior Zach Grady (East Bridgewater,
Mass.). Hoppenot makes his third First Team appearance after
registering three goals and eight points for the top offensive team
in the league. Grady paces all NESCAC players with 10 goals,
including a conference-high four game-winning markers, and is tied
for fifth with 20 points.
Two of the three First Team All-NESCAC midfielder selections are
repeat honorees, as sophomores Pat Devlin
(Washington Crossing, Pa.) of Connecticut College and
Charlie Gruner (Stevenson, Md.) of Wesleyan were
recognized for the second straight year. Devlin paced the Camel
offense with nine points on three goals and three assists. He
chipped in two game-winning goals during the season, including the
difference maker in a 2-1 win over Williams. Gruner helped control
possession at midfield and assisted the Cardinal transition game,
as evident by his three assists on the year. Amherst’s
Nico Pascual-Leone (Wayland, Mass.) earned an
all-conference nod for the first time in his career after leading
the Jeffs in every offensive category, including points (22), goals
(7) and assists (8). The junior has turned in three game-winning
goals so far this season as Amherst heads into NCAA Tournament play
on Saturday.
Defensively, the First Team features two defenders who have earned
All-NESCAC recognition before. Senior Ben Bratt
(Winchester, Mass.) of Wesleyan appeared on the 2012 Second Team
and 2013 First Team, and has a goal in 15 starts. He solidified a
defensive unit that turned in six shutouts. Tufts senior
Sam Williams (Thetford Center, Vt.) was elevated
to the First Team after landing on the Second Team a year ago.
Williams anchors the top defense in the league that has allowed
only 10 goals in 16 games, and pitched nine shutouts. He has also
contributed three goals for the NCAA-bound Jumbos. A pair of
juniors round out the defenders listed on the First Team, as Geoff
Danilack (Bethesda, Md.) of Williams and
Deklan Robinson (Gloucester, Mass.) of Middlebury
earn their first all-conference nods. Danilack helped the Ephs post
five shutouts to go along with a goal and an assist in 16 starts,
while Robinson contributed a goal and an assist in 17 starts for a
Panther squad that recorded nine shutouts.
Greg Sydor (Madison, Conn.) of Middlebury was
chosen as the league’s top goalkeeper for the first time in
his career. The sophomore surrendered eleven goals this season in
over 1,600 minutes between the posts and leads the conference with
an .845 save percentage. He ranks second in the NESCAC with a 0.61
goals against average and 60 saves.
Wesleyan’s Adam Cowie-Haskell (Marshfield,
Mass.) sparked the Cardinal offense with a team-best five goals and
11 points en route to being named the NESCAC Rookie of the Year.
The forward joins Matt Nevin (2005) and Adam Purdy (2009) as the
only Wesleyan players to receive the award.
Josh Shapiro of Tufts was named NESCAC Coach of
the Year for the first time in his five years at the helm. Shapiro
guided the Jumbos to a 7-0-3 conference record en route to the
program’s first No. 1 seed in the NESCAC Championship. Tufts
also received an at-large berth into its second NCAA Tournament in
three seasons.
