Field Hockey All-NESCAC Selections Announced
Bowdoin's Kennedy Named Player of the Year
HADLEY, Mass. – Junior
forward Rachel Kennedy (Trumbull, Conn.) of
Bowdoin has been named as the NESCAC Player of the Year as voted on
by the league’s coaches. Kennedy leads all conference players
with 28 goals, including eight game-winners, and ranks second in
the NESCAC with 59 points. Nineteen of her 28 goals were scored in
league play. The 2012 NESCAC Rookie of the Year and 2013 First Team
All-NESCAC selection has registered at least two goals in nine
games this season. She is the fourth Polar Bear to be named Player
of the Year, joining Marissa O’Neil (2003), Taryn King (2005)
and Lindsay McNamara (2007, 2008). Kennedy scored in
Bowdoin’s 2-1 loss to Middlebury in the NESCAC Championship
on Sunday. Bowdoin received an at-large bid to the NCAA Field
Hockey Championship and will play the winner of Mount
Holyoke/Husson on November 15.
Kelcie Finn (Weymouth, Mass.) of Trinity and
Madeline Tank (Winnetka, Ill.) of Amherst round
out the list of forwards named to the 11-member All-NESCAC First
Team. Finn paces the conference scoring with 64 points, is tied for
first in assists (10) and ranks second in goals (27). The
first-year sensation recorded three goals or more in six games, and
accounted for seven game-winning goals for the Bantams. As a result
of her efforts, Finn was selected as the NESCAC Rookie of the Year.
She joins Sarah Duncan as the only Bantams to earn award. Tank was
elevated from the All-NESCAC Second Team after ending the season
with 29 points on 13 goals, which rank fifth in the conference, and
three assists. The senior also chipped in five game-winning
goals.
Three-time First Team selection Middlebury senior
Catherine Fowler (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) headlines
the five midfielders named to the first team. The 2013 NESCAC
Player of the Year ranks third among the league players in points
(44) and goals (19). Fowler scored three of the Panthers’
five goals in the conference semifinal and final, including the
game-winning goal that clinched Middlebury’s third straight
NESCAC title. The Panthers will play the winner of the University
of New England/Simmons in the second round of the NCAA Tournament
on November 15. Joining Fowler as a repeat all-conference selection
is senior Brittany Norfleet (Solana Beach, Calif.)
of Tufts. Norfleet, a 2013 Second Team selection, has posted five
goals and four assists for the Jumbos. The remaining midfielders,
Middlebury senior Alyssa DiMaio (Morristown,
N.J.), Bowdoin senior Colleen Finnerty (Hopkinton,
Mass.) and Colby senior Erin Maguire (Wolfeboro,
N.H.), received their first all-conference selections. DiMaio tied
for a team-high 10 assists to go along with two goals, while
Maguire ranked second in points with 20 on six goals and eight
assists for the Mules. Finnerty was fourth in scoring for the Polar
Bears with six goals and four assists for 16 points, and notched
two defensive saves.
The defensive unit on the First Team is led by the Trinity duo
of senior Sophie Doering (Darien, Conn.) and
junior Sophie Fitzpatrick (Duxbury, Mass.).
Doering was a pivotal player for the Bantams at both ends of the
field, as she contributed three defensive saves and recorded 19
points on five goals and nine assists. The 2013 first-team pick was
also chosen as the NESCAC Defensive Player of the Year. Fitzpatrick
was named the league’s top goalkeeper after ranking second in
the conference in save percentage (.841) and fourth in goals
against average (1.03) and saves (90), while registering four
shutouts. Kim Kahnweiler (Winnetka, Ill.) of
Bowdoin also landed on her first All-NESCAC squad. The junior
played a key role in penalty corners at both ends of the field, as
evident by tallying two goals and three assists.
Trinity’s Anne Parmenter was named NESCAC
Coach of the Year for the first time in her 14 seasons at the helm.
Parmenter led the Bantams to an 8-2 conference record, their best
mark in conference play since 2009, and the No. 3 seed in the
NESCAC Championship. She is the first Trinity field hockey coach to
earn the award.
