Softball All-Conference Teams Released
Wesleyan's Beatty Named Player and Defensive Player of
the Year
HADLEY, Mass. – Wesleyan senior
outfielder Allee Beatty has been selected as
both the NESCAC Player of the Year and NESCAC Defensive Player of
the Year as voted upon by the conference coaches. In the midst of
her own career year, Beatty helped lead Wesleyan tie a program
record with 24 wins. Beatty is the first Wesleyan player to be
named Player of the Year, while also becoming the first Cardinal to
take home Defensive Player of the Year honors.
Beatty broke through for First Team honors after serving on the
Second Team in each of her first three seasons. She is only the
second player to win both Player and Defensive Player of the Year
awards, following former Tufts great Casey Sullivan, who earned
both honors in 2010. Beatty pounded out 51 hits for a .421 batting
average, both good for sixth best in the NESCAC. The speedy
outfielder led the conference with 50 runs scored, eight triples
and 25 stolen bases. Beatty finished her career with all-time
Wesleyan records in runs scored (152), triples (12) and stolen
bases (114), while ranking third in hits with 180. Defensively,
Beatty didn't make an error in 59 chances this season.
Beatty is one of three Wesleyan players to make the First Team,
joining NESCAC champion Tufts as the institutions with the most
representation. On the First Team with Beatty are teammates,
sophomore Jill Gately and first year
Su Pardo. If Beatty brings speed to the Cardinals,
then Gately provides the power. The shortstop led the conference
with 45 RBI and was second with seven home runs and 14 doubles. Of
Gately's 47 hits, 24 of them have gone for extra base hits,
yielding a .779 slugging percentage which tops the NESCAC. Pardo
was one of the top hurlers in the conference, en route to being
selected Rookie of the Year. The first year phenom (12-4) entered
the final weekend of the regular season with a perfect 12-0 record,
but suffered losses in each of her final outings to the three other
teams in the NESCAC Championship. Pardo is fourth in the NESCAC
with a 1.78 earned run average and has struck out 152 batters,
second most in the conference, while issuing only 24 walks. She
tossed complete games in 15 of her 17 starts and recorded four
shutouts.
Tufts' trio of First Teamers are sophomore Allyson
Fournier, the 2013 Pitcher of the Year, senior
Emily Beinecke and junior Jo
Clair. All three have spent their entire careers on the
First Team. Fournier (18-1), who was also the Pitcher of the Year
last season, has asserted herself as the most dominant pitcher in
the NESCAC. Boasting an earned run average of just 0.27, Fournier
has allowed just four runs all season, while throwing four no
hitters along the way. She has struck out 195 batters and opposing
hitters are batting a mere .072 against her.
Beinecke has been a staple on the All-Conference Team, garnering
First Team honors all four years. Beinecke can be found within the
top three in most of the Jumbos' offensive categories. She is
currently second on the team with 38 RBI, third with a .402 batting
average and 12 doubles, and fourth with 49 hits, while striking out
just three times in 130 plate appearances. Clair, the 2011 Rookie
of the Year and three-time member of the First Team, leads Tufts in
all of the major power categories. The catcher's 10 home runs lead
the NESCAC, while her 43 RBI and 13 doubles are second and tied for
third in the conference, respectively. Clair's .742 slugging
percentage is the third highest in the NESCAC and her 52 hits, 39
runs and .406 batting average all rank in the top-three for the
Jumbos.
Middlebury was right behind the Cardinals and Jumbos, placing
two players on the All-Conference First Team. Senior Jessa
Hoffman is making her fourth All-Conference team and
third consecutive appearance on the First Team. Hoffman has proven
herself over the years to be one of the best all-around hitters in
the conference. The shortstop is first in the NESCAC with 57 hits
and a slugging percentage of .779, and leads the Panthers in
batting average (.467) runs (45), triples (6), home runs (5), while
adding 11 doubles and 40 RBI. Hoffman ends her Middlebury career as
the all-time leader with 188 hits, 143 runs, a .404 batting average
and 25 triples. Another regular on the All-Conference Teams has
been junior Liz Morris. The pitcher has been
recognized on the First Team for the second straight year while
earning Second Team honors during her first year. Morris' (12-2)
earned run average of 1.44 is third-best in the NESCAC. She has
also thrown two shutouts in eight complete games, while fanning 79
batters and allowing a .234 batting average against over 92.1
innings in 18 appearances.
A pair of veterans and a first year also make their first
appearance on the First Team. From the East Division was Bowdoin's
senior shortstop Toni DaCampo, who was a Second
Team selection in 2011. DaCampo led the Polar Bears with a .360
batting average, piling up 49 hits, including 12 doubles and
scoring 40 runs. The shortstop also added four home runs, 19 RBI, a
pair of three-baggers and drew 24 walks to bring her on base
percentage to .451.
From the West Division are Amherst senior Kaitlin
Silkowitz and Hamilton first year Olivia
Gozdz. Silkowitz, an outfielder, finished the season on
top of the NESCAC leaderboard with a .478 batting average and .524
on base percentage. Her 54 hits ranks second in the conference and
she leads the Jeffs with 36 runs scored and 19 stolen bases.
Another outfielder, Gozdz was right behind Silkowitz with a .472
batting average in her debut. She collected 50 hits, which broke a
Continental single-season record, and doubled 12 times, tying for
fifth in the NESCAC. Gozdz scored a team-high 23 runs and also
drove in 12.
For the second straight year, Tufts head coach Cheryl
Milligan was chosen by her peers as the NESCAC Coach of
the Year. It is the sixth time Milligan has won the award and the
first time being recognized in back-to-back years since winning in
2007 and 2008. Milligan, a four-year starter at shortstop for the
Jumbos and 1995 graduate, is in the middle of her 20th season with
the Tufts softball program. After finishing her playing career, she
became an assistant with the Jumbos before taking over head
coaching duties in 2003. Milligan led Tufts to its eighth NESCAC
crown this past weekend and second in a row.
