Middlebury’s Leung Repeats as Player of the
Year
HADLEY, Mass. - For the second time in as many
years, Middlebury sophomore Lok-Sze
Leung has been chosen by the conference coaches as
the NESCAC Player of the Year. Leung has enjoyed another strong
season with the Panthers as she heads into this weekend's NCAA
Championship with a 27-2 record in singles play.
The reigning NESCAC Player and Rookie of the Year opened her
sophomore season with 12 consecutive straight-set wins, including a
6-0, 6-0 victory in the final of the USTA/ITA New England Regional
Championship on September 30. Two weeks later, Leung followed that
performance with a trip all the way to the final of the National
Small College Championships. She competed at the number one
position all season for Middlebury and won her last 11 matches to
help the Panthers reach the semifinals of the conference
championship. Leung was one of six players from the NESCAC chosen
to participate in the NCAA individual championships from May 23 to
25 in Kalamazoo, Mich. In addition to Player of the Year honors,
Leung earned a spot on the First Team in singles for the second
straight year. She was also named to the 2012 Second Team in
doubles.
Juniors Kara Shoemaker (Princeton, N.J.) and
Kathleen Elkins (Davidson, N.C.) and sophomores
Maria Pylypiv (Weatogue, Conn.) and
Rebecca Curran (Rumford, R.I.) represented
Williams on the First Team. Shoemaker and Elkins earned both
singles and doubles honors, while Curran and Pylypiv picked up
spots on the doubles team. Shoemaker was named to her second
straight First Team in singles after posting an 18-8 record at the
top spot for the Ephs. Elkins compiled a perfect 18-0 singles
record playing primarily in the second and third positions. She was
named to the First Team in doubles for the second straight year and
received her second all-conference award in singles after she was
named to the 2011 Second Team. Pylypiv recorded a 23-2 singles mark
primarily out of the number five spot for the Ephs. She also posted
an 18-11 doubles record at the top two spots, often playing as a
partner to Elkins. Curran teamed up with Shoemaker and posted a
24-3 doubles record at the number one position. The duo will
compete together at the NCAA individual championships later this
month.
Juniors Jordan Brewer (La Quinta, Calif.) and
Gabby Devlin (McLean, Va.) of Amherst each earned
a spot on the First Team. Brewer posted a 16-7 record at the number
one singles position and a 23-5 mark at the first doubles spot to
earn First Team recognition in each for the second time in her
career. Brewer was previously named to the First Team in both
singles and doubles in 2011. She has also been invited to compete
at the NCAA individual championships. Devlin is making her third
straight appearance on the First Team in doubles. She has posted an
18-3 record this season and 16 of those victories came with Brewer
as her partner. The pair has been selected to compete in doubles at
the national individual championships.
Kellen Alberstone (Tarzana, Calif.) of Bowdoin
also collected First Team honors. The Polar Bears' top player has
tallied an 18-9 singles record and earned a spot on the First Team
for the third straight year. She was also named to the Second Team
in doubles in 2011. Alberstone will represent Bowdoin at the NCAA
individual championships later this month.
Trinity first year Melita Ferjanic (Samobor,
Croatia) was selected as the NESCAC Rookie of the Year. Ferjanic
posted a 16-9 doubles record at the top position and earned a spot
on the Second Team. She also recorded a 12-8 mark at the number one
singles spot, earning First Team honors, and has been selected to
compete at the national individual championships.
Seniors Lindsay Katz (Owings Mills, Md.) of
Tufts and Nancy Worley (New Orleans, La.) of
Williams shared the conference's Senior Sportswoman of the Year
award. In addition to the Sportswoman of the Year award, Katz and
Worley each earned Second Team recognition in singles for the third
time overall. Katz has been selected as a singles alternate for the
NCAA individual championships.
For the second straight year and the fourth time in five years,
Williams sixth-year head coach Alison Swain was
selected by her counterparts as NESCAC Coach of the Year. A 2001
Williams graduate and former All-NESCAC First Team Doubles honoree,
Swain led the Ephs to their sixth conference championship overall,
and first since 2011. Williams has won five consecutive national
championships under Swain since 2008, and the Ephs will look to
defend their title beginning this weekend at home in the NCAA
championship.
