Track & Field All-Conference Teams Announced
HADLEY, Mass. - Following the completion of the
NESCAC Men's and Women's Track and Field Championships this past
Saturday at Tufts University, the NESCAC has announced its 2013
All-Conference Teams. The top three finishers in each event during
the championship receive All-Conference recognition.
Bates senior David Pless and Tufts junior
Graham Beutler shared the honor of the
Sabasteanski Award as the Most Outstanding Male Performers. Pless
collected his second straight Sabasteanski Award after winning
three events for the second straight year. Pless broke the NESCAC
meet and Ellis Oval/Dussault Track record with his 60'0" (18.30m)
throw in the Shot Put. He is currently ranked number one in the
nation in the Shot Put and top 10 in both the Discus and Hammer
Throw. His Discus throw reached 164'09" (50.22m), while he heaved
190'08" (58.11) in the Hammer Throw.
Beutler won the 200-meter Dash (21.80) and the 400-meter Run
(48.30), both in personal best times. He also anchored the second
place 4x100-meter Relay and winning 4x400-meter Relay. The
Sabasteanski Award is named in honor of the late Frank
Sabasteanski, who graduated from Bowdoin and later led the cross
country and track and field programs at the college for 28
years.
Tufts senior Kelly Allen was named the
Sabasteanski Award winner as the Most Outstanding Female Performer.
This is Allen's second Sabasteanski Award, having received the same
honor in 2011. Allen won three events to lead the Jumbos to their
first NESCAC Championship since 1988. Allen's three victories
included a 43'1" throw (13.13m) in the Shot Put, a 153'2" (46.69m)
in the Discus, and a 172'10" (52.67m) in the Hammer Throw. Her
Discus victory was the fourth of her career, and she also defended
her Shot Put title. Allen also placed third in the Javelin with a
throw of 121'6" (37.04m) to score 36 points for Tufts. Allen
finishes NESCAC competition with eight career victories in
championship meet appearances.
Rookie Most Outstanding Performer honors went to
Mitchell Black of Tufts and Alexis
Walker of Wesleyan. Black placed second in the
800-meter Run and the Triple Jump and also led off the 4x400-meter
Relay. Walker accounted for 28 individual points and also
contributed to a third-place finish in the 4x100-meter Relay as
Wesleyan's top gun during the meet. Her first-place leap of 18'5"
in the Long Jump broke her own school record by 1-1/4 inches. She
also won the 100-meter Dash with a 12.29 clocking, while her time
of 25:53 earned her runner-up status in the 200-meter Dash.
Tufts University swept the coaching awards, with Ethan
Barron's staff earning Men's Track and Field Coaching
Staff of the Year. Barron was the Coach of the Year in 2006, 2007,
2008, and 2010 and collected his fifth honor with his staff after
leading Tufts to its first men's track and field championship since
1991. The Tufts women's coaching staff, led by head coach
Kristen Morwick, was selected at the Women's Track
and Field Coaching Staff of the Year. Morwick was Coach of the Year
in 2012, and with her staff, led the Jumbos to a 203 point showing
for their first conference championship since 1988.
