NESCAC Volleyball All-Conference Teams Announced
Williams' Jasuta Takes Home Player and Rookie of the Year Honors
HADLEY, Mass. – First-year outside hitter Tori Jasuta (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) of Williams has been selected as the 2013 NESCAC Player and Rookie of the Year by the league’s coaches. Jasuta stormed onto the collegiate scene, leading the conference with 3.98 kills per set, while ranking fourth with a .322 hitting percentage. She also ranks ninth with 3.58 digs per set. Jasuta is the first rookie in league volleyball history to be named Player of the Year and the first player in league volleyball history to receive Player and Rookie of the Year in the same season. She is the third Williams player to earn Player of the Year, joining Joyia Chadwick (2002) and Robin Young (2003, 2004). Jasuta is the fourth Eph to earn Rookie of the Year along with Chadwick (2001), Melissa Pun (2006) and Nicole Ballon-Landa (2007).
Two other Williams players, senior opposite hitter Emily Doll (Villa Park, Calif.) and sophomore setter Ryan Farley (La Jolla, Calif.), joined Jasuta on the All-NESCAC First Team. Doll earns first-team recognition after being named to the second team in 2012. She ranks second on the squad with 281 kills, third with 226 digs and fourth with 42 blocks. Farley averages 10.60 assists per set for the potent Eph offensive attack that hits over .275 as a team to go along with 44 blocks.
Middlebury senior Megan Jarchow (Cos Cob, Conn.) closed out her decorated career with her third consecutive spot on the First Team after being named Rookie of the Year in 2009. The outside hitter is tied for second in the league and first among her teammates with 3.74 kills per set. Jarchow finished second on the squad with 180 digs.
Rounding out the All-NESCAC First Team is Trinity senior outside hitter Hannah Brickley (Melrose, Mass.), Amherst first-year outside hitter Maggie Danner (Newport Beach, Calif.) and Tufts junior middle hitter Isabel Kuhel (Brisbane, Calif.). Brickley ranks fourth in the conference with a team-best 3.70 kills per set and is tied for fourth in the league with 3.88 digs per set. The three-time all-conference selection was named to the First Team in 2011 and the Second Team in 2012. Danner paced the Jeff offense with 3.32 kills per set, which ranks sixth in the league, to earn her first all-conference nod. Kuhel, the 2011 NESCAC Rookie of the Year and 2012 Second Team honoree, was one of the most efficient hitters in the league. She ranks second hitting at a .350 clip, while also ranking third in the conference with 83 total blocks.
Senior libero Taylor Vail (Glendale, Calif.) of Bowdoin was named NESCAC Defensive Player of the Year after ranking among the league leaders with 3.62 digs per set to go along with a .922 reception percentage. Vail graduates as Bowdoin’s career leader in digs with 1,567. She is the first player in program history to receive the award.
Middlebury junior outside hitter Amy Hart (Kenilworth, Ill.). and Connecticut College sophomore outside hitter Caroline Martin (Palo Alto, Calif.) garnered All-NESCAC Second Team recognition for the second time in their careers after being named to the squad last season. Martin was also the 2012 NESCAC Rookie of the Year. Both players are joined on the squad by first-time picks Bowdoin senior right side hitter Ellie Brennan (Medway, Mass.), Wesleyan senior outside hitter Kim Farris (Atlanta, Ga.), Trinity sophomore middle hitter Kate Giddens (Ranchos Palos Verdes, Calif.), Tufts junior outside hitter Hayley Hopper (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Bowdoin sophomore outside hitter Christy Jewett (Sunnyvale, Calif.).
Christi Kelsey of Williams was named Coach of the Year for the first time in her five years at the helm after leading her squad to a 25-4 record. With their unblemished 10-0 mark in league play, the Ephs earned their first NESCAC Championship since 2009 and league-high 10th overall title. Williams will host an NCAA Regional this weekend.
