Williams Sweeps Men's & Women's Rowing Crowns
ECAC-NIRC Results
WORCESTER, Mass. - Williams College
placed first in both the men's and women's grand final during the
ECAC-National Invitational Rowing Championships (NIRC) on Friday at
Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass. The pair of victories gives
the Ephs the NESCAC Rowing Championships for the fourth year in a
row.
In the women's grand final,
Williams posted a time of 6:39.048, roughly five seconds faster
than runner-up Bates (6:43.897). Trinity was the only other NESCAC
team with a boat in the grand final, coming in fifth overall at
6:56.391.
The victory gave the Ephs their
seventh consecutive conference crown and eighth overall. The
Bobcats finished second in 2011 as well.
The men's grand final was the last
event of the day. Although Trinity had the best time among the
three morning heats, Williams would pace the field in the
afternoon, winning in 5:56.156. It was a one-two-three finish for
the NESCAC, as Bates came in second, just 2.242 seconds back
(5:58.398), while Trinity was third in 6:00.977.
The performance provided Williams
with its fourth-straight men's title and fifth overall.
The Williams women's rowing team
will receive an automatic invitation to the NCAA rowing
championships at Lake Mercer in West Windsor, N.J. on May 25-26. The
Ephs have won the last six national titles and own seven
overall NCAA crowns.
