Tufts’ Browne Completes Rare Three-Peat as Player of the Year

HADLEY, Mass. – Julia Browne (Old Brookville, N.Y.) of Tufts has been named the NESCAC Player of the Year, as determined by the conference coaches. It's the third time in a row that the senior Browne has collected the conference's top honor, a rare feat among all conference sports. The 2010 NCAA singles champion, Browne enters this year's NCAA Tournament action at 19-6 overall.

In addition to being named Player of the Year for the third consecutive spring, the 2008 Rookie of the Year was selected to an All-NESCAC team for the fourth time in her career. Browne added First Team Singles and Doubles to her long list of accomplishments for the third year in a row after being named to the Second Team Singles as a rookie. Browne has been playing at No. 1 singles for the Jumbos once again this season, going 12-4 in dual match play. During the fall, Browne reached the semifinals of the ITA New England Regional Championships and the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament. Along with Browne on the First Team was doubles partner Shelci Bowman (Dallas, Texas), a first year player for Tufts. The duo have recorded a 14-5 dual match record together.

Joining Browne on the First Team Singles for the third year in a row were juniors Victoria Aiello (Milton, Mass.) of Middlebury and Kristin Alotta (West Islip, N.J.) of Williams. Aiello, the 2009 NESCAC Rookie of the Year, has posted an 8-5 record in dual match play at No. 1 singles so far this spring for the Panthers. A member of the Ephs' NCAA championship-winning squads over the last two years, Alotta holds a 24-8 record in singles play this season, as she reached the finals of the ITA New England Regional Championship and the NEWITT event. Williams won its first NESCAC title since 2004 last weekend over rival Amherst, 5-3.

Middlebury's Aiello was accompanied on the First Team by junior Leah Kepping (Northport, N.Y.) and sophomore Brittney Faber (Minnetonka, Minn.) Kepping collected All-NESCAC honors on the singles squad for the first time with a 12-2 record at No. 2 in dual match play heading into this weekend's NCAA Tournament. She added First Team Doubles along with partner Faber, as the two have combined to go 12-3 at the No. 1 position for the Panthers.

Amherst first year Jordan Brewer (Woodland Hills, Calif.) claimed not only First Team accolades but was also selected by the coaches as the NESCAC Rookie of the Year. Holding a 15-5 singles record entering the weekend, Brewer came away with the NEWITT title and the ITA New England Regional Championship crown this past fall. Brewer is hoping to help the Jeffs win a national crown before the NCAA individual tournament begins later this month, as she is among the five individuals on the All-Conference First Team Singles that were selected as part of the field of 32. Brewer also added First Team Doubles with rookie partner Gabby Devlin (McLean, Va.), one of three first year players on the 2011 First Team. The pair have lost only two matches so far this spring.

Rounding out the 2011 All-NESCAC First Team was sophomore Kellen Alberstone (Los Angeles, Calif.) of Bowdoin. The Polar Bears' No. 1 earned First Team Singles honors with a 15-5 overall record. She was also selected to the Second Team Doubles with partner Kate Winingham, as the pair are one of four NESCAC doubles teams that will compete for the NCAA doubles title.

Senior Sportswoman of the Year went to Browne of Tufts. A year ago, Browne received the Arthur Ashe Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. The ITA award is bestowed upon players who have exhibited outstanding sportsmanship and leadership as well as scholastic, extracurricular, and tennis achievements.

Sixth-year head coach Kate Bayard of Tufts was chosen by her counterparts as Coach of the Year. Bayard's Jumbos went 6-2 against conference foes and enters the weekend with a 14-5 overall mark. She was previously honored as Co-Coach of the Year for the league in 2009.
