Trinity’s Lim
Captures Player of the Year
HADLEY, Mass. – Senior Randy Lim (Penang, Malaysia) of
Trinity College has been named the 2011 NESCAC Player of the Year,
as determined by the conference coaches. Lim enjoyed the finest
season of his career with the Bantams, posting a 16-1 record in
match play as Trinity won its fifth-straight NESCAC Men's Squash
Championship along with the program's 13th consecutive College
Squash Association national crown.
In addition to being named NESCAC
Player of the Year, Lim also earned a spot on the All-NESCAC First
Team after being selected to the Second Team in each of the past
two years. Joining Lim from Trinity on the First Team were
classmate Parth Sharma (Jaipur, India) and junior Vikram Malholtra
(Mumbai, India). Sharma, one of four returners from last season's
First Team, earned All-Conference honors for the third time in his
career as he went 16-2 in match play for the Bantams. Malholtra was
promoted from the 2010 Second Team this season with an 11-3 record.
He also reached the Pool Division semifinals at the CSA Individual
National Championships this past weekend at Dartmouth.
Of the 10 individuals honored on
the First Team, eight earned All-NESCAC in some form last winter.
Tufts senior Alex Gross (Washington, D.C.) wrapped up his career
with the Jumbos with his third consecutive appointment to the
All-Conference First Team. Gross posted a 14-12 mark while playing
atop the Jumbos' ladder this season.
Representing Williams on the
All-NESCAC First Team were the duo of senior Will Gruner (Portland,
Ore.) and junior Will Morris (Bronxville, N.Y.). Gruner, who was
chosen as part of the Second Team in 2009, went 13-10 in match
play. Back for a second tour on the First Team this year, Morris
recorded an 11-13 mark as the Ephs primary player in the number one
spot.
Valentin Quan (San Salvador, El
Salvador) of Middlebury came away with All-Conference honors for
the third consecutive year. Named to the Second Team as a freshman
before moving up to the First Team as a sophomore, Quan garnered
First Team recognition as a junior this winter with a 10-12 record
while playing nearly the entire year at the number one position for
the Panthers.
A pair of players from the 2010
Second Team earned First Team honors for the first time in their
careers. Colby junior Harry Smith (Locust Valley, N.Y.), a two-time
All-NESCAC selection, had an impressive showing in 2010-11 for the
Mules, going 20-8 at the number-one position. Bates senior William
Katz (Bronxville, N.Y.) went 14-8 as he played at the top of the
Bobcats ladder this season.
Rounding out the 2011 All-NESCAC
First Team was Wesleyan freshman John Steele (Merion Station, Pa.),
who was also named as the conference's Rookie of the Year. In his
first season with the Cardinals, Steele recorded a 19-6 mark in
match play at the top spot in his team's ladder.
NESCAC Coach of the Year went to
Wesleyan's Shona Kerr. Now in her sixth season leading the
Cardinals, Kerr's squad went 14-12 overall this winter and earned
the seventh seed in the 2011 NESCAC Men's Squash Championship - the
program's highest placement in the five-year history of the
tournament.
