Women's Tennis All-Conference Teams Released
Browne from Tufts Repeats as Player of the Year
HADLEY, Mass. – For the second time in as many years, Tufts junior Julia Browne (Old Brookville, N.Y.) has been chosen by the conference coaches as the NESCAC Player of the Year. Browne is a remarkable 18-1 in dual match play heading into this weekend’s NCAA Tournament action, as the Jumbos are participating in the national tournament for the 10th consecutive year.
The 2008 NESCAC Rookie of the Year, Browne also landed on an All-NESCAC team for the third time in her career, as she was a First Team Singles selection in 2009 and a Second Team member in 2008. Playing at the #1 position for the second year in a row, Brown has earned all of her 18 victories in straight sets while her lone loss came over three sets. In the fall, Browne finished as the runner-up at the ITA New England Regional Championships and went on to finish third at the ITA National Small College Championships. Browne also came away with All-NESCAC First Team Doubles honors with senior partner Meghan McCooey (Cumberland, R.I.) for the second-straight spring. The duo are 13-7 in dual match play and won the ITA New England Regional title back in September.
Three members from the 2010 NESCAC Women’s Tennis Champion Amherst squad earned All-NESCAC on the First Team. Senior Brittany Berckes (Secaucus, N.J.) added another All-Conference Singles honor to her collection, as she has been named to the First Team Singles in each of the last three years after garnering Second Team plaudits as a first year player in 2007. The 2008 NESCAC Player of the Year, Berckes is 5-4 in dual match play at #1 this year. She won the New England Women’s Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament in October following a semifinal appearance in the ITA New England tournament. Berckes has also been know for her doubles play throughout her career, as the two-time NCAA doubles champ claimed First Team Doubles with sophomore Laura Danzig (Allendale, N.J.). Partnered together all season, Berckes and Danzing are 9-4 in dual matches and came away with the doubles title at NEWITT. Danzig also managed First Team Singles for the first time in her career with a 12-1 dual mark primarily at #2 for the Lord Jeffs. Junior Carlissa King (Bayside, N.Y.) rounded out the Amherst contingent on the First Team as she moved up from the 2009 Singles Second Team. King has won 11 of her 12 dual matches entering NCAA Tournament play.
Williams joined Amherst as the only other squad with three members apiece on the First Team. For the third consecutive year, Senior Grace Baljon (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) was selected by the coaches as a member of the First Team Singles. Baljon, who received Second Team Singles recognition as a rookie in 2007, is 12-6 at #1 for the Ephs in duals this spring. The Ephs’ captain was also honored as the NESCAC Senior Sportswoman of the Year in recognition of her hard work, respectful play, and love of the game. After being named to the Doubles Second Team in the past two years, Baljon and sophomore partner Taylor French (Hidden Hills, Calif.) earned First Team honors with a 16-4 dual match mark primarily at #1. Sophomore Kristin Alotta (West Islip, N.Y.) went from the Second Team in 2009 to the First Team in 2010 thanks to a 16-3 dual record at #2 for the Ephs. Alotta claimed the ITA New England Regional Championship over Tufts’ Browne in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.
Middlebury sophomore Victoria Aiello (Milton, Mass.) landed on the First Team Singles for the second consecutive year. After going 11-6 at #1 for the Panthers and being recognized as NESCAC Rookie of the Year in 2009, Aiello returned to the top spot this season and is 8-6 in dual match play.
Rookie of the Year honors went to Tufts first year Lindsay Katz (Baltimore, Md.). Seeing a majority of action at the #3 spot in the Jumbos’ lineup this season, Katz owns an 12-6 record in dual match play prior to the NCAA Tournament. Katz was also chosen as a member of the Singles Second Team.
Williams third year head coach Alison Swain won NESCAC Coach of the Year outright this season after sharing the honor last year. Swain, a 2001 graduate of Williams and former All-NESCAC honoree herself, has the two-time defending NCAA Women’s Tennis Champion Ephs poised for a shot at a third national title with an 18-3 record heading into the opening rounds of this year’s tournament.
