Detter of Trinity Named Player of the Year
HADLEY, Mass. - Trinity College senior Gustav Detter (Malmoe, Sweden) has been selected by the conference coaches as the 2009 NESCAC Player of the Year. Detter and the rest of the Bantams came away with the 2009 NESCAC Men’s Squash Championship earlier this month along with recently capturing their 11th-straight Potter Trophy in the College Squash Association (CSA) National Championship.
Detter, who also earned NESCAC All-Conference First Team honors for the second year in a row, went 13-1 during the 2008-09 campaign and has a career record with the Bantams of 61-10. Joining Detter on the All-NESCAC First Team from the Bantams were senior Manek Mathur (Mumbai, India) and junior Baset Chaudry (Lahore, Pakistan), as both individuals garnered First Team recognition last year. Mathur recorded a 14-1 mark this season while Chaudry, the 2008 NESCAC Player of the Year, went 11-1. The trio combined with their Trinity teammates to extend the program’s winning streak to 202 matches.
Williams was the only other team to have three individuals claim First Team accolades on this year’s squad. Returning from the 2008 First Team was junior Ethan Buchsbaum (Princeton, N.J.) and he was accompanied by senior George Miller (Charlottesville, Va.) and freshman William Morris (Bronxville, N.Y.). The Ephs finished as the runner-up to Trinity at this winter’s NESCAC championship for the third year in a row and were also the runner-up to Western Ontario in the Hoehn (B) Division at the CSA championships.
Other first-time All-NESCAC honorees on the first team included Bates junior Kush Mahan (Gainesville, Fla.), Hamilton senior John DeWitt (Wayland, Mass.), Middlebury senior JP Sardi (Pleasantville, N.Y.), and Tufts sophomore Alex Gross (Washington, D.C.).
Completing the 2009 NESCAC Men’s Squash All-Conference First Team was Connecticut College freshman Antonio Diaz-Gonzales Salas (Mexico City, Mexico). Diaz-Gonzales Salas holds a 24-0 record heading into this weekend’s CSA Individual National Championships. He was also named the NESCAC Rookie of the Year.
Coach of the Year honors went to Trinity’s Paul Assaiante for the second year in a row. Assaiante, now in his 15th season with the Bantams, guided his squad to a 19-0 record this year along with their 11th CSA title.
