Middlebury's Quizon Honored for Second Time as Player of the Year

HADLEY, Mass. - Middlebury senior forward Emily Quizon (Chino Hills, Calif.) came away today as the 2006 NESCAC Women’s Ice Hockey Player of the Year. Quizon earned the honor for the second-straight season, helping her Panthers squad to a 15-1-0 conference record and the top seed in the 2006 NESCAC Women’s Ice Hockey Championship for the first time since 2002.

Quizon also received NESCAC All-Conference First Team recognition for the third year in a row. She enters the weekend second in scoring for Middlebury with 15 goals and 18 assists for 33 points through 24 games, collecting four power-play goals, two shorthanded tallies, and two game-winners. Quizon led all skaters in NESCAC games this year, netting 11 goals and 15 assists in 16 conference contests. A two-time All-American during her time at Middlebury, Quizon ranks fifth on the Panthers’ all-time scoring list with 164 career points (58-106-164).

Quizon is one of four Middlebury players on the six-member All-Conference First Team. She is joined up front by rookie Annmarie Cellino (W. Seneca, N.Y.), along with junior defender Shannon Tarrant (Brookfield, Conn.) and senior netminder Kate Kogut (Springfield, Mass.).

Cellino, who also received the nod as the conference’s Rookie of the Year, sits atop the score sheet for Middlebury this season, ranking among the leaders in the NESCAC in a variety of statistical categories. Her 20 goals to date put her in a tie for first among NESCAC skaters, and Cellino finds herself third in the league in total points (20-15-35). Cellino’s five shorthanded markers not only leads all of NCAA Division III but also ties her for first among all NCAA Women’s Ice Hockey skaters (Jana Harrigan, Ohio State).

Tarrant earned All-Conference recognition for the third year in a row, after receiving First Team honors in 2003 followed by a place on the Second Team last season. Through 23 games, the defender has chipped in five goals and 12 assists for 17 points this season. Tarrant broke a 3-3 deadlock at Amherst on December 2 with the decisive goal in the third period, her first goal of the 2005-06 campaign.

Kogut rounds out the Middlebury members on the All-Conference First Team, joining Quizon as a three-time member (2003, 2004). Kogut has posted a 16-2-0 record in her final season between the pipes for the Panthers, sporting a league-best 1.63 goals against average along with a .913 save percentage, second among NESCAC netminders. She also has three shutouts so far this year.

Bowdoin sophomore defender Kristen Cameron earned NESCAC All-Conference First Team accolades for the second year in a row. The Rookie of the Year in 2005, Cameron currently leads all NESCAC blue liners in scoring this year with 12 goals and 19 assists for 31 points, sixth among all NESCAC skaters. The second-year rearguard has seen action in every game for Bowdoin this season, currently ranking third among her Polar Bear counterparts in scoring along with three power-play and game-winning goals.

Colby first year forward Laura Anning rounds out the 2006 NESCAC Women’s Ice Hockey All-Conference First Team. Anning was part of an 11-member class to don the Colby sweater for the first time this season, leading her teammates in scoring with 20 goals and 16 assists for 36 points. She found her name on the score sheet in 19 of the Mules’ 23 contests this season, collecting a season-high five points on two goals and three assists against Trinity on January 14. Amongst league players, Anning’s 36 points ties her for first in scoring with Bowdoin’s Katie Forney, an All-Conference Second Team selection, while her 20 markers ties her for first in goals scored with Cellino.

Colby head coach David Venditti was the choice among the coaches for Coach of the Year. In only his second year behind the bench for the Mules, Venditti guided Colby to a 15-7-1 overall mark and a 9-6-1 NESCAC record, returning the Mules to the NESCAC Women’s Ice Hockey Championship semifinals for the first time since 2003.
