Amherst's Cherney Garners Top Honors for Second Time in Three Years

HADLEY, Mass. - Amherst senior attacker Derek Cherney (Chappaqua, N.Y.) has been named the 2007 NESCAC Player of the Year, as determined by the conference coaches. It is the second time in three years that Cherney has been honored with the league's top award, as he took home Co-Player of the Year in 2005.

In addition to being named NESCAC Player of the Year, Cherney also achieved a rare feat by being named to the NESCAC All-Conference First Team for the fourth year in a row. Cherney currently leads the league in points this season with 59, averaging nearly four points per game, as he tied for fourth in the conference with 31 goals and second in assists with 28. The 2004 NESCAC Rookie of the Year, Cherney has led the Lord Jeffs in scoring in each of the previous four seasons, accumulating 118 goals and 204 points over the course of 59 games.

Joining Cherney on the attack were Tufts senior Mark Warner (Wading River, N.Y.), one of four Jumbos to make the First Team, Williams junior Dixon Hargrove (Wallingford, Pa.), and Wesleyan sophomore Russ Follansbee (Deerfield, Mass.), as all three players rank on the conference leader board in points. Warner has had a career year at Tufts this season, scoring 19 goals and 27 assists for 46 points to pace his squad. An All-NESCAC Second Team member last year, Hargrove led his team in points for the third year in a row with 41 points, tallying 12 goals and 29 assists. Follansbee currently ranks second among his teammates in scoring with 23 goals and 19 assists for 42 points, collecting seven game-winners for the Cardinals so far this season.

At midfield, Bowdoin senior Kevin Mullins (Duxbury, Mass.), Williams junior Michael Vrla (Paradise Valley, Ariz.), and Middlebury sophomore Mike Stone (Boston, Mass.) all received All-NESCAC First Team honors for the first time in their careers. Mullins, a Second Team selection in 2005 and a NESCAC All-Academic honoree the past two years, finished his career with the Polar Bears on a high note as he scored a career-high 26 points (10-16-26) to rank second among all Bowdoin players. Vrla is tied with Amherst's Cherney for fourth in the NESCAC in goals scored with 31 as he helped the Ephs reach the semifinals of the 2007 NESCAC Men's Lacrosse Championship for the first time in program history. Stone is one of five 20-goal scorers on the Panther squad this season, collecting 24 goals and seven assists for 31 points, including four man-up markers.

Tufts sophomore Jordan Yarboro (Herndon, Va.) was selected to the NESCAC All-Conference First Team at long stick midfielder. Through 15 games this season, Yarboro has five goals and an assist to go along with 45 ground balls. Trinity sophomore Connor Wells (Haddam, Conn.) earned a spot on the First Team at specialist as he led the league in both ground balls with 140, averaging 9.33 per game, and face-offs wins with 170, successfully winning over 70-percent of the time.

Three of the conference's top four defenses were represented on the All-NESCAC First Team with Tufts senior Wiley Dornseif (Littleton, Colo.) being joined by sophomores James Guay (North Scituate, R.I.) of Middlebury and Spike Malangone (Lake Grove, N.Y.) of Wesleyan. Dornseif claimed First Team honors for the second-straight year while helping the Jumbos reach the NCAA Tournament this week for the first time in program history. Guay and Malangone join a youthful First Team this spring, as sophomores led all classes with six selections.

Rounding out the 2007 NESCAC All-Conference First Team are Wesleyan senior goalkeeper Charlie Congleton (Groton, Mass.) and Tufts sophomore Matt Harrigan (Darnestown, Md.). Congleton, who received All-NESCAC accolades for the third year in a row after being selected to the Second Team in 2005 and the First Team in 2006, leads the league for the second-consecutive season in both goals against average (5.59) and save percentage (.657) with a 16-2 overall record. Harrigan is fourth among conference netminders in goals against average at 7.87 and fifth in save percentage at .621.

Wesleyan freshman Jon Killeen (Derry, N.H.) came away with NESCAC Rookie of the Year honors after a strong first year with the Cardinals. The first year attacker is fourth among his teammates in scoring this season with 22 goals and 12 assists for 34 points through 18 games.

Tufts head coach Mike Daly was the choice among the coaches, earning Coach of the Year honors. Daly, who last earned Coach of the Year in 2004, has guided the Jumbos to a 12-3 record this spring along with the top seed in the 2007 NESCAC Men's Lacrosse Championship for the first time.
