Flaherty of Bowdon Earns Player of the Year

HADLEY, Mass. - Bowdoin senior forward Eileen Flaherty (Fairfield, Conn.) has been named the 2007 NESCAC Women's Basketball Player of the Year. Flaherty helped lead the Polar Bears to a perfect 9-0 conference record for the fourth time in five years and the 2007 NESCAC Women's Basketball title, the seventh year in a row that Bowdoin has won the league crown. It is the second time in four years that a member of the Polar Bears squad has earned Player of the Year accolades, after Bowdoin's Lora Trenkle received the award in 2004.

Flaherty, the Co-Rookie of the Year in 2004, also gained recognition on the 2007 NESCAC All-Conference First Team, completing a four-year run as a First Team honoree. The senior forward has continued a trend of leading her team in scoring from the previous two seasons by averaging a NESCAC-best 18.1 points to go along with a team-leading 6.4 rebounds per game this year. Starting all 27 games this season, Flaherty led the Polar Bears in scoring 22 different times, posting a season-high 26 points in a win at William Paterson on Nov. 25. Flaherty is the all-time leading scorer at Bowdoin with 1,780 points entering this weekend's NCAA action and the only basketball player in Polar Bear history to surpass 1,700 career points.

Joining Flaherty on the All-Conference First Team is sophomore teammate Jill Anelauskas (Medfield, Mass.), as the Polar Bears placed two players on the First Team for the sixth year in a row. Anelauskas follows Flaherty in second on the Bowdoin stat sheet this season with 11.6 points and 6.0 rebounds over 27 games, hitting 46.2-percent of her shots (132-268) so far to rank among the top 10 players in the conference in field goal percentage. The sophomore forward scored a season-high 24 points on two occasions this year, the most recent coming at Trinity on Jan. 26 where she went 10-for-13 from the floor (.769) and came within one point of her career high of 25 that occurred against the Bantams a year ago.

Williams senior forward Maggie Miller, who shared Co-Rookie honors with Flaherty in 2004, received All-NESCAC recognition for the fourth year in a row, earning a spot on the First Team for the third time (2003, 2006) after coming away with Second Team honors during her sophomore campaign. Miller ranks among the top five players in the NESCAC in both scoring (4th) and rebounding (5th) this season, averaging 15.7 points to lead the Ephs in scoring for the second year in a row while grabbing 7.6 boards to place second among her teammates.

After finding a spot on the Second Team last year, Trinity senior guard/forward Sarah Cox (Norwell, Mass.) moved up to the All-Conference First Team in 2007. Cox, who paced the Bantams in both scoring and rebounding for the second-straight season, ranks second overall in the league in scoring with 17.4 points per game and is sixth in rebounding with 7.1 boards. Cox was first in scoring in conference play, averaging 19.0 points against NESCAC foes this season with a career-high 30 points coming during the Bantams' first NESCAC win of the season against Colby on Jan. 27. Cox was also first this season in the league in steals per game, averaging 2.74 over 23 contests.

Bates sophomore forward Val Beckwith (Woburn, Mass.) rounds out the 2007 NESCAC All-Conference First Team selections. Beckwith finished her second season with the Bobcats third among conference players in scoring, averaging a team-high 16.8 points while starting all 25 games. Beckwith, who led the Bobcats in scoring on 16 different occasions this winter, scored a career-high 27 points in a win over Williams on Feb. 2.

The NESCAC Defensive Player of the Year award was shared between Bowdoin's Katie Cummings (Summit, N.J.) and Williams' Kaylan Tildsley (Andover, Mass.). The two seniors helped their respective teams lead the conference in defense this season, as Bowdoin allowed 46.3 points per game (1st) while Williams gave up an average 53.5 points (3rd). Cummings has the most steals in the NESCAC at 68 and ranks fourth with an average 2.52 per game. Cummings and Tildsley are one-two in assist-to-turnover ratio, as Cummings leads the league with 3.18 while Tildsley is second at 1.85.

Amherst forward Samantha Swensen (Rockaway Park, N.Y.) earned NESCAC Rookie of the Year honors. Swensen started 24 of 25 games and was third among her teammates in scoring with 9.6 points along with placing second among the Jeffs in rebounds with 6.2. Her field goal percentage of 49.8-percent ranks third among conference players (102-205).

Tufts head coach Carla Berube was chosen by the conference coaches as NESCAC Coach of the Year for the first time during her tenure with the Jumbos. Berube guided Tufts to an 8-1 conference record and a second-place finish in the NESCAC standings this season, both program-bests, while the Jumbos' overall record of 18-8 came within one win of the school record. Tufts reached the conference championship for the first time ever this year.
