NESCAC Women's Soccer All-Conference Teams Announced
Woodson of Williams Receives Player of the Year Honors
HADLEY, Mass. - Williams junior forward Gabrielle Woodson (Plano, Texas) has been selected by the conference coaches as the 2007 NESCAC Player of the Year. Woodson has been a big part of the Ephs’ successful season, as she has helped her squad post an unblemished 9-0-0 conference record along with securing the 2007 NESCAC Women’s Soccer Championship, the second NESCAC title in program history. She is the first Williams player to receive the league’s top honor since Jill Carter earned Player of the Year in 1999.
Woodson is in the midst of a breakout junior year, having already established career highs in multiple statistical categories heading into this weekend’s NCAA Tournament action. In her two previous seasons at Williams, Woodson had five goals and two assists for 12 points. This year, Woodson has tallied 14 goals, including six game-winners, and seven assists for 35 points through 16 games, ranking second in the NESCAC overall in both goals and points. Eight of Woodson’s 14 goals came against conference opponents, a figure that no other NESCAC player was able to match. Woodson also received All-Conference honors for the second year in a row, earning a spot on the First Team after being named to the Second Team in 2006.
Joining Woodson at forward on the NESCAC All-Conference First Team was sophomore teammate Brianna Wolfson (Brookville, N.Y.), one of five Williams players to garner First Team recognition. Wolfson is currently third among NESCAC players in both goals and points, recording 10 goals and nine assists for 29 points in 16 starts for the Ephs. Wolfson and Woodson both had three goals and three assists during the 2007 NESCAC Women’s Soccer Championship.
Rounding out the forward contingent on the First team were Bowdoin senior Ann Zeigler (Washington, D.C.) and Tufts sophomore Cara Cadigan (Nahant, Mass.). Zeigler, who earned First Team honors for the third-consecutive year, is fourth in the conference in scoring with a team-leading seven goals and 13 assists for 27 points. Zeigler broke the all-time Polar Bear points record this season and is only three goals shy of the career goals record, amassing 35 goals and 23 assists for 95 points. After missing the entire 2006 campaign due to injury, Cadigan is having a remarkable first season with a league-leading and program-best 17 goals and 39 points while starting all 16 games. While Cadigan only netted seven goals in conference play, all seven proved to be the game-winning tally for the Jumbos, as Tufts finished the regular season second in the NESCAC with a 7-2-0 record. Cadigan was also named as the NESCAC Rookie of the Year for her efforts.
At midfield, Tufts senior Martha Furtek received All-NESCAC recognition for the fourth year in a row, earning First Team honors for the third-consecutive fall after being named to the Second Team as a rookie in 2004. A consistent performer for the Jumbos, Furtek is fourth on her team in scoring with three goals and four assists for 10 points, a figure she has averaged during each of her four years at Tufts. Also returning from last year’s First Team was Amherst sophomore Meg Murphy (Springfield, Mass.). The 2006 NESCAC Rookie of the Year, Murphy led the Jeffs in scoring with four goals and two assists for 10 points. Senior midfielders Bobbi Dennison (Freeport, Maine) of Bowdoin and Kaolin McEvoy (Longmeadow, Mass.) of Williams both found a spot on the All-Conference First Team for the first time in their careers. A Second Team selection in 2004 and 2006, Dennison has collected three assists this season, as she helped the Polar Bears reach the final match of the NESCAC Women’s Soccer Championship this year for the first time in program history. McEvoy (1-2-4) commanded an Ephs midfield that supported an offense that scored 26 goals and a defense that surrendered only two in conference play, both of which were NESCAC-best figures.
Amherst junior defender Alanna Darling (Charlton, Mass.) was named to the First Team for the second-straight year, as only four individuals from the 2006 All-NESCAC First Team returned to the team in 2007. Darling finished second on the Jeffs in scoring with a career-high three goals and an assist. Darling was joined in the back by Williams junior Caitlin Colesanti (Wyckoff, N.J.) and Middlebury sophomore Anjuli Demers (Dracut, Mass.).
Williams sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Sinnenberg (Westfield, N.J.) completes the 2007 NESCAC All-Conference First Team. Sinnenberg has been a key component of the Ephs defense this season while playing the bulk of minutes in net, leading the NESCAC in most statistical categories with a goals against average of 0.21, a save percentage of .938, and a sterling 16-0-0 record with nine shutouts.
Williams head coach Michelyne Pinard was recognized by her peers as NESCAC Coach of the Year. In her sixth season, Pinard has guided the Ephs to a 16-0-0 record along with the 2007 NESCAC Women’s Soccer title, the second in program history, and a spot in this year’s NCAA Tournament. It is the first time that Pinard has been honored with the league’s Coach of the Year award.
