Bowdoin's McNamara, Oelschlager Earn Player, Rookie of the Year

HADLEY, Mass. - Bowdoin junior forward Lindsay McNamara (Milton, Mass.) has been named the NESCAC Player of the Year, while first year teammate Ingrid Oelschlager (Roanoke, Va.) was selected by the conference coaches as NESCAC Rookie of the Year. The tandem helped the Polar Bears secure an unprecedented third-consecutive NESCAC Field Hockey crown this fall along with an unblemished regular season record of 14-0, only the third time in program history that Bowdoin has gone undefeated in the regular season. McNamara is the third Polar Bear in the last five years to earn the conference's top honor, after Marissa O'Neil received Player of the Year recognition in 2003 and Taryn King came away with the honor in 2005.

McNamara, who also earned NESCAC All-Conference First Team honors for the second year in a row, is second in the NESCAC in scoring with 18 goals and 42 points while starting all 16 games, an average of 1.12 goals and 2.62 points per contest. McNamara has led the Polar Bears in offensive production over the past three seasons, as her 18 tallies during the 2007 campaign are a personal best and her 42 points are just two shy of a career-high 44 from last year. During McNamara's tenure in Brunswick, she has accumulated a program-record 51 goals - 20 of which have served as game-winners - and 17 assists for 119 points through 54 starts while helping Bowdoin achieve a 51-3 record, win three NESCAC Field Hockey Championships, and reach the semifinals of the NCAA Field Hockey Tournament twice.

In addition to being named the Rookie of the Year, Oelschlager found a spot on the All-NESCAC Second Team, as she has proven to be a valuable asset off the bench for the Polar Bears this season. Oelschlager is second only to McNamara on the Bowdoin stat sheet with 15 goals and two assists for 32 points through 16 appearances and is the top first year player in the league in both goals and points, ranking fourth in the NESCAC in points and third in goals.

Joining McNamara on attack were seniors Reid Berrien (Westport, Conn.) of Middlebury and Ileana Casellas-Katz (Denmark, Maine) of Tufts along with juniors Karli Del Rossi (Mantua, N.J.) of Trinity and Meighan McGowan (Greenwich, Conn.) of Williams. Berrien and McGowan, who have led their respective teams in scoring in each of the last thee seasons, both gained First Team honors for the third-consecutive year, as nine of the 12 First Team members received some form of All-NESCAC recognition last autumn. Berrien has a career-best 20 goals and 46 points through 18 games this season, first in the NESCAC in both categories, while McGowan, the 2005 Rookie of the Year and 2006 Player of the Year, heads up the Ephs offense with six goals and eight assists for 20 points in 2007. Moving up from the 2006 Second Team to this year's first team was the Jumbos' Casellas-Katz, scoring a team-record 15 goals and 34 points while helping Tufts achieve its highest-ever finish in the NESCAC standings and the program's first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 1998. Del Rossi had a breakout season for the Bantams, scoring a career-high 12 goals and 29 points to lead her teammates and rank sixth among all conference players in both categories.

At midfield, Middlebury senior Lacey Farrell (Greenwich, Conn.) and Amherst junior Alyssa Dudzik (Darien, Conn.) returned to the First Team for the second-straight year and were joined by juniors Brittany Holiday (Wellesley, Mass.) of Tufts and Julia King (Yarmouth, Maine) of Bowdoin. Farrell has recorded four goals and seven assists for the Panthers, helping her squad reach the final game of the NESCAC Field Hockey Championship for the second year in a row, while Dudzik scored three goals and added in two assists in 15 starts for the Jeffs this year. Holiday is currently second among her Tufts teammates in scoring with eight goals and an assist for 17 points. The offensive spark for the Polar Bears, King leads the NESCAC this season in assists with 19 and is third for Bowdoin in points (5-19-29).

Defenders Val Young (Concord, N.H.) of Bowdoin and Jess Overlander (New Canaan, Conn.) of Williams achieved First Team accolades for the second time in their careers after both earned the honor last year. In her final season with the Polar Bears, Young is part of a Bowdoin defense that ranks first in the nation in goals against, collecting 13 shutouts while allowing only three goals so far this season. Overlander helped the Eph defense post a 1.41 goals against average, as the junior back made three defensive saves in 2007. Rounding out the 2007 NESCAC Field Hockey All-Conference First Team is Colby senior goalkeeper Jamie Enos (South Hamilton, Mass.). The 2004 Co-Rookie of the Year and a Second Team honoree in 2005, Enos posted a goals against average of 2.04, a save percentage of .813, and two shutouts this fall.

Bowdoin head coach Nicky Pearson was named NESCAC Coach of the Year for the third year in a row. Pearson, who has now received Coach of the Year honors six times during her career, guided the Polar Bears to their third-consecutive NESCAC title and an undefeated regular season for the second time in the last three years.
