2006 Women's Tennis All-Conference Teams Announced
Raverta of Amherst
Named Player of the Year
HADLEY, Mass. - Amherst senior
Kristen Raverta (West Springfield, Mass.) has been named the 2006
NESCAC Women’s Tennis Player of the Year, as decided by the
conference coaches. Raverta guided her squad to its third
consecutive NESCAC Women’s Tennis crown on April 30, as the
top-seeded Jeffs defeated Williams 6-3 to claim the 2006 NESCAC
championship.
Raverta also earned NESCAC
All-Conference First Team Singles honors as well this year, the
fourth year in a row that she has been selected as a First Team
member. Raverta posted a 17-2 singles record this season, winning
her last eight matches. On the doubles side, Raverta and sophomore
teammate Alicia Menezes (Staten Island, N.Y.) received
All-Conference First Team Doubles recognition. The pair won both of
their matches at the 2006 NESCAC Women’s Tennis Championship
at Williams. Menezes also received All-NESCAC Second Team Singles
honors, and the two will look to continue their success at the
quarterfinals of the NCAA Women’s Tennis Tournament.
Joining Raverta as the only other
holdover from last year’s All-Conference First Team Singles
is Middlebury junior Amy Roche (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.). Roche,
the NESCAC Rookie of the Year in 2004, helped her Panther squad
reach the semifinals of the 2006 NESCAC Women’s Tennis
Championship and the second round of the NCAA Women’s Tennis
Tournament this season with a 17-6 singles record.
After earning All-Conference Second
Team Singles recognition a year ago, Tufts junior Jennifer Luten
(Clayton, Mo.) earned a spot on the All-Conference First Team
Singles this season. Along with doubles partner senior Becky Bram
(Winchester, Mass.), the pair of Luten and Bram came away with
NESCAC All-Conference First Team Doubles. Bram also earned
All-Conference Second Team Singles and was named the Senior
Sportswoman of the Year.
Juniors Alison Dunn (Tucson, Ariz.)
of Colby and Beret Remak (Minneapolis, Minn.) of Connecticut
College join sophomore Sarah Coleman (Bronxville, N.Y.) as first
time All-Conference First Team Singles honorees. Dunn posted a 9-3
record this season for the Mules, while Remak is currently 16-6 in
singles competition this season. Remak guided the Camels to their
third consecutive 10-win season, along with winning the New England
Women’s Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament Title (NEWITT) at
#1 singles and qualifying for the NCAA Women’s Tennis
Championship for the second-straight year. Coleman also had a
successful season from the first singles position, posting a 22-4
record. Coleman is the first player from Hamilton to earn NESCAC
Women’s Tennis All-Conference recognition.
The combination of Williams’
rookie Cary Gibson (Augusta, Ga.) and sophomore Annie Schneidman
(Sherborn, Mass.) round out the NESCAC All-Conference First Team
Doubles. Paired together since March, Gibson and Schneidman earned
a hard-fought 9-7 doubles victory in the semifinals of the NESCAC
tournament on April 29 that helped the Ephs advance to the final
past Middlebury, 5-4.
NESCAC Rookie of the Year honors
went to Bowdoin’s Sarah D’Elia (Fairfield, Conn.), as
she put together a 15-11 singles record in her first season with
the Polar Bears. In the first round of the 2006 NESCAC
Women’s Tennis Championship, D’Elia helped Bowdoin
reach the semifinals by winning her #1 singles match against Tufts,
6-4, 7-6 (9). D’Elia was also named All-Conference Second
Team Singles and Doubles.
Coach of the Year accolades went to
Williams head coach Julie Greenwood. Greenwood guided the Ephs this
season to the final of the 2006 NESCAC Women’s Tennis
Championship, along with the quarterfinals of the NCAA
Women’s Tennis Tournament, which begins on May 17 in Santa
Cruz, Calif. Greenwood last won the Coach of the Year honor in
2002.
