2005 NESCAC Baseball All-Conference Teams Announced

Natale Honored as 2005 Player of the Year
HADLEY, Mass. – Trinity
College third baseman Jeff Natale was named the 2005 NESCAC
Baseball Player of the Year in a vote by the conference coaches.
Natale, a three-time first team selection, led the league in hits
(57), runs scored (48), runs batted in (46) and slugging percentage
(.760) while ranking among the league leaders with 15 doubles, four
triples, six home runs, and a .442 batting average. Natale’s
Bantams have a school record 31 wins on the year, earned the East
Division’s top seed in the NESCAC Championship and are the
top seed in this weekend’s NCAA Division III New England
Regional Tournament.
Amherst junior pitcher Joe Vladeck
was honored as the 2005 NESCAC Pitcher of the Year. Vladeck posted
a 1.67 ERA and is 7-1 in 15 appearances for the Jeffs. The junior,
who has allowed just 12 earned runs in 64.2 innings pitched with 59
strikeouts, won two games for Amherst as the Jeffs secured their
second consecutive NESCAC Championship. Joining Vladeck on the
first team is Amherst junior shortstop Zach Schonberger.
Schonberger led the league with eight home runs while hitting .363
and bringing home 38 runners for the Jeffs.
Natale was one of five Trinity
standouts honored on the first team. Seniors Andrew Fries and Aaron
Goldstein along with juniors Erik Paisley and Greg Talpey were all
first team selections. Fries, a second team choice a season ago,
hit .357 and is second on the team with 35 RBI while making just
two errors behind the plate. Paisley, a first baseman, hit .402 for
the Bantams which are among the top teams nationally with a .357
team batting average.
Greg Talpey earned six wins in
eight appearances for the Bantams. The junior pitcher, who leads
the conference with a 1.41 earned run average, is 6-1 on the year
for Trinity and struck out 48 batters in 57.1 innings pitched.
Senior outfielder Goldstein hit .380 for the Bantams and is third
in the league with 34 runs scored behind teammates Natale and
Fries. Trinity head coach Bill Decker earned Coach of the Year
honors for the second time in three seasons leading his Bantams to
the school’s best mark of 31-7 heading into the NCAA
tournament.
Juniors Ryan Armstrong of
Middlebury and Jared Lemieux of Bowdoin join Goldstein as first
team selections in the outfield. Armstrong led the conference and
ranks second nationally with a .495 batting average. He paced the
Panthers in several offensive categories including on base
percentage (.587) and slugging percentage (.753). Lemieux earned
first team accolades for the second straight season. The 2003
Rookie of the Year hit .417 for the Polar Bears with 33 runs
scored, 13 stolen bases and drew 31 walks for a .576 on base
percentage.
Bates senior pitcher Mike Kinsman
posted the league’s third best ERA of 2.09. Opposing batters
hit just .182 against Kinsman who finished 5-1 for the Bobcats in
seven appearances.
Tufts sophomore Bryan McDavitt is
the lone underclassman selected to the first team. McDavitt hit
.389 for the Jumbos with 29 runs scored.
Colby first year outfielder Nick
Spillane was named NESCAC Rookie of the Year. Spillane, who
finished with the conferences’ fourth best batting average at
.418, led the Mules in hits, stolen bases, slugging percentage and
on base percentage.
