Trinity’s Jeff Natale Honored as 2005 Player of the Year

HADLEY, Mass. – Trinity College third baseman Jeff Natale was named the 2005 NESCAC Baseball Player of the Year in a vote by the conference coaches. Natale, a three-time first team selection, led the league in hits (57), runs scored (48), runs batted in (46) and slugging percentage (.760) while ranking among the league leaders with 15 doubles, four triples, six home runs, and a .442 batting average. Natale’s Bantams have a school record 31 wins on the year, earned the East Division’s top seed in the NESCAC Championship and are the top seed in this weekend’s NCAA Division III New England Regional Tournament.

Amherst junior pitcher Joe Vladeck was honored as the 2005 NESCAC Pitcher of the Year. Vladeck posted a 1.67 ERA and is 7-1 in 15 appearances for the Jeffs. The junior, who has allowed just 12 earned runs in 64.2 innings pitched with 59 strikeouts, won two games for Amherst as the Jeffs secured their second consecutive NESCAC Championship. Joining Vladeck on the first team is Amherst junior shortstop Zach Schonberger. Schonberger led the league with eight home runs while hitting .363 and bringing home 38 runners for the Jeffs.

Natale was one of five Trinity standouts honored on the first team. Seniors Andrew Fries and Aaron Goldstein along with juniors Erik Paisley and Greg Talpey were all first team selections. Fries, a second team choice a season ago, hit .357 and is second on the team with 35 RBI while making just two errors behind the plate. Paisley, a first baseman, hit .402 for the Bantams which are among the top teams nationally with a .357 team batting average.

Greg Talpey earned six wins in eight appearances for the Bantams. The junior pitcher, who leads the conference with a 1.41 earned run average, is 6-1 on the year for Trinity and struck out 48 batters in 57.1 innings pitched. Senior outfielder Goldstein hit .380 for the Bantams and is third in the league with 34 runs scored behind teammates Natale and Fries. Trinity head coach Bill Decker earned Coach of the Year honors for the second time in three seasons leading his Bantams to the school’s best mark of 31-7 heading into the NCAA tournament.

Juniors Ryan Armstrong of Middlebury and Jared Lemieux of Bowdoin join Goldstein as first team selections in the outfield. Armstrong led the conference and ranks second nationally with a .495 batting average. He paced the Panthers in several offensive categories including on base percentage (.587) and slugging percentage (.753). Lemieux earned first team accolades for the second straight season. The 2003 Rookie of the Year hit .417 for the Polar Bears with 33 runs scored, 13 stolen bases and drew 31 walks for a .576 on base percentage.

Bates senior pitcher Mike Kinsman posted the league’s third best ERA of 2.09. Opposing batters hit just .182 against Kinsman who finished 5-1 for the Bobcats in seven appearances.

Tufts sophomore Bryan McDavitt is the lone underclassman selected to the first team. McDavitt hit .389 for the Jumbos with 29 runs scored.

Colby first year outfielder Nick Spillane was named NESCAC Rookie of the Year. Spillane, who finished with the conferences’ fourth best batting average at .418, led the Mules in hits, stolen bases, slugging percentage and on base percentage.
