Tufts' Clarke and Amherst's Cherney Share Player of the Year Honors

HADLEY, Mass. - Amherst’s Derek Cherney and Tufts’ Devin Clarke were selected by the conference coaches as NESCAC co-Players of the Year. Cherney, a sophomore attacker for the Jeffs who was honored as last season’s Rookie of the Year, led the league in goals (39) and points (68) as Amherst finished 11-4, their best mark in more than a decade. Clarke earned all-conference first team honors for the second consecutive season after leading the Jumbos with 28 goals on the year.

Joining Cherney on the first team are teammates Greg Donohue and Andrew Wilcox. All three players earned first team honors for the second straight year. Donohue, a senior defenseman, and Wilcox, a long stick midfielder, anchored a Jeffs defense which allowed just under eight goals per game. Wilcox paced the Jeffs with 77 ground balls on the year.
Tufts senior attacker Bryan Griffin, last season’s Player of the Year, was honored on the first team for a third time. Despite missing three games due to injury, Griffin led the Jumbos this year with 51 points (22 goals and 29 assists) and finished his career as the all-time leading scorer with 235 points.

NESCAC Champion Middlebury placed a trio of seniors on the team. Mike Murray and Ed Brown led a defense which yielded just under eight goals per game during conference contests. Murray is a short stick midfield defender honored on the first team in the newly created ‘specialist’ position. Brown, a senior defender, earned first team honors after placing on the second team a season ago. Panther senior midfielder Dave Leach contributed 14 goals and nine assists to an offense ranked in the top twenty nationally in goals per game. First year attacker Jim Cabrera led the Middlebury attack with 33 goals on the season. Cabrera was named the league’s Rookie of the Year.

Wesleyan’s Glenn Adams, making his second consecutive first team appearance, ranked fourth in the conference with 25 assists and led the Cardinals with 42 points on the season.

Bowdoin teammates Connor Fitzgerald and Andrew O’Brien each received first team accolades. Fitzgerald, a junior attacker, paced the Polar Bears in both goals (33) and assists (20) while O’Brien, a senior defender, led a Bowdoin defense which finished second in the conference allowing 7.47 goals per game.

Connecticut College goalkeeper Topher Grossman rounds out the first team selections. The senior led the conference with 201 saves this year finishing with a .589 save percentage.

Bates head coach Peter Lasagna was honored by his peers as the NESCAC Coach of the Year. Lasagna led the Bobcats to a 9-6 overall mark and an appearance in the conference tournament semifinals.
