Bates' Zurek Honored as Player of the Year

HADLEY, Mass. - Bates senior forward Olivia Zurek was named NESCAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Year in a vote by conference coaches. A first team selection last year, Zurek led the league in scoring and rebounding with 16.7 points and 9.8 boards per game. Among the league leaders in steals (2.85 per game) and field goal percentage (50.1%), the senior has led Bates to a 24-2 record and an NCAA at-large tournament berth.

Bowdoin won their fifth consecutive NESCAC title with two NESCAC first team selections leading the way. Junior forward Justine Pouravelis, who was also named the NESCAC Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight season, ranks second in the conference averaging 1.5 blocked shots and 2.65 steals per game while hitting 52.9% of her attempts from the field. Eileen Flaherty, last season’s Rookie of the Year, was also a first team honoree. The sophomore forward led the 24-2 Polar Bears with 15.6 points per game as Bowdoin advanced to their sixth consecutive NCAA tournament.

Rounding out the first team selections are two juniors, Williams’ Colleen Hession, and Wesleyan’s Hannah Stubbs. Hession, who averaged 15.8 points per game for the Ephs from her guard spot, was the league’s best at the free throw line connecting at an 88.4% clip while averaging over two 3-pointers made per contest. Stubbs, who ranks fourth nationally in field goal percentage 62.0%, scored 16.4 points with 8.2 boards per game leading Wesleyan to an at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament.

Freshman guard Sarah Barton of Bates and freshman forward Matia Kostakis of Amherst share NESCAC Rookie of the Year honors. Barton led the league in assists averaging 4.58 per game while posting a 1.43 assist to turnover ratio along with 52 steals this season. Kostakis ranked second in the conference on both the offensive and defensive backboards averaging 9.8 rebounds per game and ranked third in blocked shots with 34 on the season.

Bates coach Jim Murphy was voted NESCAC Coach of the Year by his peers. In his ten years as head coach at Bates, he has compiled a 181-71 record. Bates, ranked third in the nation with a 24-2 record on the season, has a first round bye in the NCAA Tournament and will face Emmanuel on March 5 in Lewiston.

NESCAC all-conference selections are determined in a vote by the conference coaches. Additional players honored are due to ties in the voting.
