2004 Baseball All-Conference Teams Announced
Bergeron of Williams
Selected as Player of the Year
HARTFORD, Conn. - Williams College
first baseman Jabe Bergeron was named the 2004 NESCAC Baseball
Player of the Year in a vote by the conference coaches. Bergeron, a
four-time first team selection, led the league in hits (67), runs
scored (54), runs batted in (46), home runs (12) and total bases
(121) while hitting .419 and leading Williams to a 30-12 mark on
the year and the best record in the NESCAC West Division. In the
NESCAC tournament Bergeron, the 2001 NESCAC Rookie of the Year, hit
.400 with five runs scored and seven RBI including a three-run home
run against Amherst to help the Ephs tie the decisive game in the
bottom of the ninth inning.
Trinity junior pitcher Mark
Tremblay was selected as the 2004 NESCAC Pitcher of the Year.
Tremblay led the league with a 1.29 ERA and posted a 7-1 mark for
the Bantams in eight appearances. Tremblay allowed just seven
earned runs, 14 overall, in 48.2 innings as Trinity finished the
year 27-9, 10-2 in the NESCAC East. Jeff Natale joins Tremblay as a
first team selection for the Bantams. Natale, a junior second
baseman, led the conference and is ranked sixth nationally with a
.484 batting average. Natale led Trinity in 10 offensive categories
including on base percentage (.596), runs scores (43), runs batted
in (42) and home runs (7).
Amherst pitcher Brian Donahue was
named NESCAC Rookie of the Year Brian Donahue. Donahue, a freshman
pitcher for the Jeffs, has the league’s second best ERA at
1.64 and earned six wins for Amherst in his first campaign
including an eight-hit complete game in the NESCAC tournament.
Tufts senior pitcher Randy Newsom was also a first team selection.
Newsom led the league in strikeouts with 57 and finished the year
6-1 for the Jumbos with a 3.10 ERA.
Bowdoin shortstop Kevin Bougie is
one of three Polar Bears honored on the first team. Bougie, a first
team selection in 2002, led Bowdoin with 34 runs scored while
hitting .350 at the plate for the Polar Bears. Joining Bougie are
teammates Tom McMahon and Jared Lemieux. Lemieux, a sophomore
outfielder who was named the 2003 Rookie of the Year last season,
led Bowdoin in hits (52) and RBI (41). Senior first baseman Tom
McMahon ranked among the league leaders in RBI (37) and home runs
(9).
Williams freshman catcher Chris
Kenney and junior outfielder Mark Chmiel join Bergeron as first
team selections. Kenney hit .366 with a .620 slugging percentage,
eight home runs and 45 RBI in his first year of collegiate
baseball. Chmiel ranked second in the league at the plate hitting
.419.
Wesleyan sophomore outfielder Jeff
Maier rounds out the first-team honorees. Maier collected 52 hits
to post a .409 average at the plate for the Cardinals.
Bowdoin head coach Mike Connolly
was honored by his peers as the NESCAC Coach of the Year. Connolly
directed Bowdoin to their most-ever wins (24) in the 138-year
history of the program. Bowdoin has improved their win total in
each of Connolly’s six years at the helm.
NESCAC all-conference selections
are determined by a vote of the conference coaches. Additional
players honored are due to ties in the voting.
