2004 Women's Ice Hockey All-Conference Teams Announced
Williams' Wasserman Selected as Player of the Year
HARTFORD, Conn. – Senior forward Molly Wasserman was honored as the NESCAC 2003-04 Women’s Ice Hockey Player of the Year in a vote by the league’s coaches. Wasserman, a first team selection in 2001-02 as a sophomore and second team honoree last season, leads the conference in goals (26) and points (46) and has tallied seven game winning goals this season leading her team to a 15-9 mark.
Joining Wasserman on the first team is sophomore teammate Ellissa Popoff. Popoff leads a Williams defense ranked second in the league in penalty kill percentage (.944) and third in the conference in scoring defense allowing 2.25 goals per game.
Four Middlebury standouts were selected to the all-conference first team. Forwards Lorna Gifis and Emily Quizon rank near the top of every offensive statistical category. Quizon, a sophomore, leads the conference in assists with 28 on the season and ranks second in the country averaging 1.22 assists per game. With 21 goals on the year, Gifis, a junior, is tied for second in the league in scoring. Both Gifis and Quizon are tied for second in league points this season with 42.
Middlebury’s Kate Kogut and Shannon Tarrant were also chosen to the first team. Kogut, a sophomore goaltender, ranks third in the nation and leads the conference in goals against average (0.96) allowing just 10 goals in over 600 minutes of action with a .931 save percentage. Tarrant, a freshman who led all conference defenders with 23 points scoring 11 goals with 12 assists, leads a Middlebury squad which ranks third in the nation in scoring defense allowing 1.22 goals per game.
Bowdoin first year Meghan Gillis was honored as NESCAC Rookie of the Year. Gillis, who tallied 17 goals and 19 assists for 36 points, ranks in the top six among all players in those three offensive categories. Middlebury head coach Bill Mandigo was named the NESCAC Women’s Ice Hockey Coach of the Year after leading the Panthers to a 15-1 league mark and 20-3 overall record.
Williams will meet Middlebury this Saturday, March 6 in the semifinal round of the NESCAC Women’s Ice Hockey Championship. Host Bowdoin (18-4-1) will play Hamilton (11-12-1) in the first semifinal at 1:00 p.m. followed by the Middlebury/Williams contest at 4:00 p.m. Semifinal winners will meet for the NESCAC Championship on Sunday, March 7 at 1:00 p.m.
NESCAC all-conference selections are determined in a vote by the conference coaches.
