Middlebury's Cooper Earns Player of the Year for Second Consecutive Year

HARTFORD, Conn. – In a vote by the conference coaches, senior forward Kevin Cooper of Middlebury was selected as the 2003-04 NESCAC Men’s Ice Hockey Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. Cooper, a three-time all-conference selection, currently leads the NESCAC in points (44) and goals (27) as the second-ranked Panthers (22-3-0) enter as the number one seed in the NESCAC Championship for the fifth consecutive season.

Middlebury, who will meet sixth-seed Hamilton (15-8-2) in the first semifinal at 1:00 p.m., will host the semifinals of the conference tournament on Saturday, March 6. Trinity (15-8-1) will play Colby (14-6-4) in the other semifinal at 4:00 p.m. The winners of Saturday’s contests will meet for the NESCAC Championship on Sunday, March 7 at 1:00 p.m.

Joining Cooper on the first team is senior teammate Mike Velez. Velez anchors a Middlebury defense which leads the nation in scoring defense allowing just 1.68 goals per game.

Junior goaltender Doug Kisielius is one of three Trinity Bantams honored on the first team. Kisielius, a repeat first-team honoree, enters the NESCAC semifinals ranked in the top 25 nationally with a 2.43 goals against average and .916 save percentage. Junior forward Joseph Ori, a second-team selection a season ago, is tied for sixth in the league in points with 13 goals and 16 assists on the year. Trinity sophomore Brendan Timmins leads all league defenders in scoring recording eight goals and 17 assists for 25 points on the year.

Colby junior defender Patrick Walsh and Bowdoin forward Adam Dann round out the first-team selections. Dann, last season’s co-Rookie of the Year, tied for second in the conference in goals scored with 19. Walsh, who recorded seven goals and 14 assists from his defensive position, heads a Colby squad which ranks third in the NESCAC and 15th in the nation in scoring defense allowing 2.58 goals per contest.

Wesleyan freshman Will Bennett earned NESCAC Rookie of the Year honors. Bennett, a freshman forward, led his team and ranked fifth in the league in goals scored with 15. Wesleyan head coach Chris Potter was chosen as the NESCAC Men’s Ice Hockey Coach of the Year after leading the Cardinals to their best mark in 15 years.

NESCAC all-conference selections are determined in a vote by the conference coaches. Additional players honored are due to ties in the voting.
