Williams' Holtschulte
and Cretti Earn Most Outstanding Performers
HADLEY, Mass. - Junior Neal
Holtschulte of Williams College earned medalist and NESCAC
Men’s Most Outstanding Performer honors for the second
consecutive year at the 2004 NESCAC Cross Country Championships
held at Colby College. Williams junior Caroline Cretti was the
women’s medalist and earned NESCAC Women’s Most
Outstanding Performer honors. Cretti, a first team performer at
last year’s championship and the 2002 NESCAC Most Outstanding
Performer and Rookie of the Year her freshman season, finished the
five kilometer course in a time of 17:48.2 while leading Williams
to a share of the women’s team title.
Holtschulte, also named the 2002 Rookie of the Year, finished
the eight kilometer course in 25:21.0, edging Wesleyan senior
Weston Fuhrman by just over eight seconds. Eph teammates Stephen
Willis and Sam Van Volkenburgh also placed among the top seven to
earn all-conference first team honors. Last season’s Rookie
of the Year Joshua Kennedy of Tufts earned first-team recognition
for the second straight year. The sophomore, along with junior
teammate Matthew Lacey who finished fourth overall, helped the
Jumbos defend their NESCAC men’s team title. Wesleyan junior
Owen Kiely rounds out the first team selections.
Six of this year’s
women’s first-team honorees also placed in the top seven a
season ago. Middlebury senior Jessica Manzer, a four-time
first-team selection, edged three-time honoree Amherst senior
Carter Hamill by just over one second to finish the race in a time
of 17:57.2 in second place. Williams senior Jenn Campbell, the 2001
NESCAC Rookie of the Year and three-time first-team selection,
placed fourth this season. Amherst sophomore Shauneen Garrahan, the
2003 NESCAC Most Outstanding Performer and Rookie of the Year,
finished fifth in 2004 edging fellow first-team honorees Courtney
Quirin, a senior at Wesleyan and four-time all-NESCAC performer,
and Middlebury senior Marisa Cawley. Manzer and Cawley paced a
Panther squad which shared the women’s team crown with
Williams.
Amherst freshman Tomas Morrissey and Kim Partee finished as the
highest first year runners at the 2004 Championships to claim
NESCAC Rookie of the Year honors in their respective sports.
Morrissey was the fastest Jeff male finisher with a time of
25:51.2, enough for eleventh place. Partee placed fourteenth,
behind Hamill and Garrahan, and helped the Jeffs to a third place
team finish.
Tufts head coach Connie Putnam was
named NESCAC Men’s Cross Country co-Coach of the Year after
leading the Jumbos to the second consecutive NESCAC Championship.
Putnam shared the honor with Connecticut College head coach Jim
Butler. Colby head coach Debbie Aitken was named NESCAC
Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year. The Mules finished
fourth in the 2004 Championship, their best finish since 1998.
